Is it possible to install yum on Mageia?

Postby ninjaondemand » Nov 14th, '13, 23:11

I like the yum installer, but clearly it doesn't come with mageia. It works with rpms, so is it possible to install the YUM package manager on mageia? Would the universe collapse upon itself? :shock:

Yum is in the standard Mageia repositories, so surely you can install it.

Code: Select all
[doktor5000@Mageia3 ~]$ ufn yum
Core 32bit Release:python-yum-3.4.3-6.mga3.noarch
Core 32bit Release:yum-3.4.3-6.mga3.noarch
Core 32bit Release:yum-metadata-parser-1.1.4-4.mga3.i586
Core Release:python-yum-3.4.3-6.mga3.noarch
Core Release:yum-3.4.3-6.mga3.noarch
Core Release:yum-metadata-parser-1.1.4-4.mga3.x86_64

I'll probably never understand why anyone would even remotely consider preferring yum over urpmi, when you have worked with both in parallel.

My terminal says that there is no ufn command. Have I misunderstood your post? I thought I was supposed to use ufn followed by the package I wanted.

ufn is just a local shell function, and I've just used it to show that yum is in the default Mageia repositories.

Code: Select all
[doktor5000@Mageia3 ~]$ set | grep -A3 ufn
ufn ()
{
    urpmf -f -m --name "$@" | sort
}

You can run the same query via
Code: Select all
urpmf -f -m --name yum

Before you put up with yum, you should first have a look at https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Software_management or maybe https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Install_and_ ... r_beginner
