[SOLVED] Sept 1st update

Postby rodgoslin » Sep 3rd, '13, 00:16

Has anyone had problems with this rather large update? Mine, on two machines did not go well. On my desktop machine, I finally brought it to a conclusion, with many halts for missing files, but finally all went in, seemingly without problems. However on my 32 bit netbook, it was a different matter. I had the same problems with missing files, etc, but it seemed finally complete. However, today, when I rebooted the machine, all I have is a screen showing the wallpaper and the mouse cursor. No icons, no task bar, no nothing, just a picture on the screen. A right mouse click brings up the usual pop-up, but with a much reduced instruction set. Konsole, run, activities, unlock widgets, lock screen and leave. With "unknown settings replacing "folder view settings". The wallpaper was not even the one I had set, but the default. Any views, anyone, before I trash the whole install and start again from scratch? I have a third machine running Mageia. Another netbook, intended to replace the rather ageing other. I'd left that since the download would have been in my ISP's prime time. On booting that up, tonight, I find that there are no current updates. Strange when yesterday there were about 400.

I had trouble with the update. The package manager greyed out and became non-responsive for extended periods of time while downloading. After the install finally went in (I just left it alone and let it run...it eventually finished) it had trashed my configuration though apparently not as bad as it trashed yours. I lost my toolbar and all configuration in the toolbar but everything else continued to function.

Took awhile reconfiguring the toolbar, but I'm up and running now...except for virtuoso, which isn't running. Of course, it is never reliable so that is not necessarily a surprise.

Well. this is a pickle. I've re-installed the operating system, but the problem persists, so presumably is in my own setup files, though how they could be affected by an update, i've no idea. Since a right click offered a Konsole, I invoked drakconf with that and created myself as a new user. Logging in as the new user gave me back a working environment. What I need to know is how to get my old user account back. Hopefully, as it was. I suppose, unless there's a better idea offered, I could copy all my user files over to the new account. Blow away the old user. Recreate the old user and copy the files back. There has to be a more elegant way.

I've resolved the problem. From the mists of time came a memory that if the .kde4 initialisation directory became corrupt, it would mangle the desktop. Rather than correct the error, it was easier to simply deletre the directory and it's contents, and the system would re-install a new standard version at the next login. Much more elegant!
