[SOLVED] missing GNOME weather applet

Postby tarazed » May 31st, '13, 14:41

Mageia 3 recently installed. Most things working fine but all of a sudden the weather applet disappeared from the panel and there seems to be no way to get it back; nothing in /usr/bin or any of the system menus. In Ubuntu apparently it resides in a package called gnome-shell-extensions. Any way to recover it for Mageia? It was definitely working yesterday.

Since I'm not a Gnome user I'm not sure if this is what you talk about, but the package 'libgweather' provides weather data for the Gnome applet panel:
Code: Select all
[marc@Rechner Desktop]$ urpmq -i libgweather
Name        : libgweather
Version     : 3.6.2
Release     : 2.mga3
Group       : System/Libraries
Size        : 92598166                     Architecture: x86_64
Source RPM  : libgweather-3.6.2-2.mga3.src.rpm   Build Host: ecosse.mageia.org
Packager    : umeabot <umeabot>
URL         : http://www.gnome.org
Summary     : GNOME Weather applet library
Description :
This is a library to provide Weather data to the GNOME panel applet.

Thanks for the reply but this RPM is already installed. No doubt it does have something to do with the weather applet. Maybe I should uninstall it and reinstall. It maybe that some update clobbered the weather applet somehow. It was definitely running the day before. I did nothing to set it up after installing Mageia 3. The panel settings were carried through from the previous session and the applet appeared along with all the other icons. It is a puzzle.

I am giving up on this one. I tried a Mageia 2 system and found that there was no trace of the weather applet in that also. There must have been some recent update which clobbered the gnome applet and somehow removed it from the system and that may have been backported to Mageia 2. Plenty of GNOME weather icons but nothing else remains. There is still a KDE plasma applet for weather info as far as I can see.

Fallback position is my own weatherview program and a localweather derivative. Plain and simple but it shows the weather on demand.

At last! Weather information is now provided via the clock/date applet. The Location tab in properties is the answer. Add your preferred location and the weather appears right there on the panel.
