Why has firefox-beta been removed?

Postby Wallace » May 23rd, '13, 06:22

I just saw in a bug report that:

Nicolas Vigier 2013-05-21 19:54:14 CEST

firefox-aurora, firefox-beta, firefox-beta-l10n packages have been removed from Mageia 3 repository.

https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8833

How will I be able to update Firefox? Certainly for a newley released distro like Mageia 3 one can reasonably expect to have a newer version than FF 17. 0.5 ! I've spent probably a total of 6 hours trying to install FF-beta because App Db says its active in current_updates_testing. With all results indicating no package. Annoyed to say the least.

It was missed when the branch was done, and for the rest you have answer in the bug report. (And it is written everywhere that we use the ESR channel)

You will be able to update it via the normal Mageia update repositories. You should be aware that since Mageia 2 we're using the ESR branches of Firefox and Thunderbird:

I understand that the Mageia team want to give stability to its distribution, but I'm confused with this point in the ESR wiki

The ESR is specifically targeted at groups looking to deploy it within a managed environment. It is not intended for use by individuals, nor as a method to mitigate compatibility issues with addons or other software. Mozilla will strongly discourage public (re)distribution of Mozilla-branded versions of the ESR.

I mean, correct me if I'wrong but I think that Mageia is distributing publicly the ESR with each release. There is something that I don't get?

Thanks for your answer.

Best.

P.S.: I do not want start a flame war for this. I'm just curious.

OP: FYI the cauldron release channels stills has Aurora (Alpha), Beta, and stable (non-ESR) Firefox release channel packages available..

Cauldron does have release? TRUE release version, not an alpha that's called release?
