[SOLVED] Mobile Broadband Connectivity Problem / Virtualbox

Postby stabbmesiter » May 20th, '13, 15:08

Hi,
Not too sure if this is:

1/. A problem
2/. More configuration needed
3/. My stupidity

Sorry if I step on any toes with this post...bit frustrated.

I have limited bandwidth so decided to download the Mageia-3-dual-CD
- bit worried that it wouldn't have my connection requirements on it.

I was right no internet access via my mobile dongle (my only way to access the internet)
- so testing in virtualbox to sort it out before installing on a real partition.

Not a problem as MCC recognized the device but couldn't configure it. Frustrating!

So, shutdown (in VB) and rebooted without the dongle (dongle connected via normal system).

urpmi comgt --no-install --resume
urpmi ppp --no-install --resume
urpmi ppp-dhcp --no-install --resume

Got the packages and dependencies that I would need for the install in the real world (all that I thought) - installed them ..the system scanned for networks but failed to find. So manually configure and couldn’t connect.

Checked /var/log/messages....not there!!!! No syslog (syslog-ng) installed?

dmesg|tail show the following

366.666917] option 2-2:1.1: GSM modem (1-port) converter detected
[ 366.667121] usb 2-2: GSM modem (1-port) converter now attached to ttyUSB0
[ 366.671204] option 2-2:1.0: GSM modem (1-port) converter detected
[ 366.671401] usb 2-2: GSM modem (1-port) converter now attached to ttyUSB1
[ 385.405528] Loading kernel module for a network device with CAP_SYS_MODULE (deprecated). Use CAP_NET_ADMIN and alias netdev-ppp0 instead.
[ 464.611845] Loading kernel module for a network device with CAP_SYS_MODULE (deprecated). Use CAP_NET_ADMIN and alias netdev-ppp0 instead
.

Sometime (but not all the time) I get the following after the config (from MCC/Network)

Congratulations, the network configuration is finished.

However, the Internet connectivity test failed. You should test your connection manually, and verify your Internet modem or router.

If your connection does not work, you might want to relaunch the configuration.:

ping "anything" fails...after a awhile.

I noted that /etc/resolv.conf had three entries in it:

nameserver 10.0.2.3
nameserver 189.40.226.80
nameserver 189.40.224.80

Which is a bit strange....if one dns fails does it automatically try the next in the list?

Now I'm starting to get out of my depth so though I would ask the techie wizards for help.

I have the sneaky suspicion that I need to get more packages but what I don’t know.

As a long time mageia 2 user who is keen to update to v.3 (with a nice clean start away from the bloat, tweaked and creaking v.2 install) any help would be appreciated.

Bit strange that mobile connectivity isn't a basic necessity...modern world and all that.
And why does my login screen sometimes look like slim and the next reboot LXDM?
On a plus shared folders in virtualbox worked ouf of the box. A first!

Regards and thanks

Well, CD can contain very limited amount of packages. And that for two archs. I'd suggest you to download LiveCD that has more packages and better support out of the box.

Yes - I could download the LiveDVD but at 1.4Gb it would take me approx 20+ hours....and then a maybe on the checksum...I don't want the KDE/GNOME bloat but do want to retain MCC.....getting tired of commandline ALL the time.

Hence my comment on limited bandwidth.

What I will do is try this on a spare partition in a real enviroment - with the additions (compgt and ppp) I did download you never know it might work. Just a clonzilla away.
I will also continue searching for a resolution via forums etc.

Just to add - I note that at

https://www.mageia.org/en/downloads/

The LiveCd (both KDE and GNOME) is listed as 32bit. No 64bit seen.

That is another reason not to use the LiveCd. May as well match the software with the hardware.
Apologies as I should have mentioned that in the original post(s)

Hi,
It worked fine after a install for real i.e.not in VirtualBox + a manual install of comgt and ppp (plus all dependencies).

So the steps need where:

Install in virtualbox
urpmi comgt ppp --no-install option (to retain the files) - easier as urpmi resolves dependencies
install on a real partion and not in virtual land
manual install of comgt anf pp + dependencies.....this took a bit of messing around as you have to resolve the dependecies before the acual install of the needed rpms (comgt and ppp).
Reboot and I know it works as I'm logged into Mageia2 and typing this.

Sorry to mess all around...should have researched more before asking for help.
