Installation info regarding the boot loader

Postby olliegab » Mar 15th, '13, 19:34

I've tried out Mageia2 on a live CD and liked it a lot. I decided to install it on a machine which already has Windows, Ubuntu, Debian and two different Mint.
I also had a spare partition to install Mageia on. When I reached the boot loader part of the installation I got a bit 'scared' as it wasn't quite clear (to me) what was the best option to pick.
At the moment the boot loader is 'controlled by' one of my Mint14 OSs and I'd like to keep it that way.
After some checks on the net I came across some info saying that the Mageia may not be recognized, or worse, that if I DID install the Mageia boot loader, my other OSs may not be recognised.
What's the route to go? And what should I choose not to risk any of the other OSs to become 'invisible'?

Cheers!

Don't install it to the MBR of your harddrive, but instead let it install to the root partition of Mageia. Then you need to add it to the Mint bootloader via chainloading.
But i believe that Mint already used Grub2, so you should look at https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_2_Err ... stribution which links to http://docteam.mageia.nl/installer/cont ... xpert.html

Instead of chainloading, at LinuxMint terminal, "sudo update-grub" and then go to grub.cfg and append "nokmsboot" to the linux line of Mageia entry,
see viewtopic.php?f=7&t=4172

ps: will be helpful if you have LinuxMint livecd handy or a "grub-rescue cd" (grub-mkrescue)
