[SOLVED] Desktop Icons

Postby retiredbrian » Dec 31st, '12, 14:03

Hi have just installed mageia 2. I have to use Gnome Classic as graphics card will not support latest Gnome . I also want to stay with gnome as I have some codes using GTK. The question is how to add icons to the desktop .Drag and drop springs back . Using "gnome-desktop-item-edit ~/Desktop/ --create-new" generates a desktop file but nothing appears on the desktop. Thanks for any ideas.

I don't have an answer for you as I seldom use Gnome but I've moved your question to Basic Support where it will get more views and hopefully an answer from someone who does use Gnome.

Hello,
I was having probs with gnome and I solved it by installing Xfce4 desktop.
Now everything goes really well. All the gnome apps work.

cheers.

I'm puzzled, is what nigelc suggested a fix or a suggestion to use Xfce4 instead of Gnome?

You should edit the title of your origanal post and prefix it with [SOLVED]

Although I don't see what Xfce has to do with Gnome I'm glad it worked for you.

Sorry, mistaken nigelc with the OP. But the workaround seems to work for both of them :D

Gnome 3 is not the same as gnome 2. The fallback mode is going to be taken out maybe?
Gnome 3 needs more hardware. i.e a bigger /more powerfull video card.
Try opening a terminal in gnome and do the same thing in Xfce4 and see the difference.
Xcfe has got more menus with right mouse button.
