This is probably silly, but... how do turn down the beep?

This forum is dedicated to basic help and support :

Ask here your questions about basic installation and usage of Mageia. For example you may post here all your questions about getting Mageia isos and installing it, configuring your printer, using your word processor etc.

Try to ask your questions in the right sub-forum with as much details as you can gather. the more precise the question will be, the more likely you are to get a useful answer

This is probably silly, but... how do turn down the beep?

Postby billo » Jun 5th, '11, 20:18

Just installed Mageia 1, and am very impressed. There were some early problems with Radeon support, but the forum had already addresssed it, and I'm a happy camper.

There is one slightly irritating thing going on, though. I can't figure out how to quiet the system beep. Every time I hit the wrong key, the thing is so loud it scares my dog. Is this a KDE thing? A hardware thing? Where do I turn it down?

Thanks!

Config:

HP dv7 series laptop, AMD Turon processor, Mageia 1 with KDE.

Could be a dog thing, have you tried with another dog? :D

Either you disable the builtin speaker, or you could try with pavucontrol.

Oh, it seems that I misunderstood the question.
You can try from KDE control center (Configure your desktop) >> Common Appearance and Behavior>>Application and System Notifications>>System Bell.

If the above suggestions don't work, try typing "alsamixer" in a terminal window. When it starts up, press F6 to select a sound card, and from the options, select your actual sound hardware (for me this is "HDA Intel"). This should display a set of volume controls for the different channels, one of which may be labelled "Beep". If the "Beep" control is there, use the left/right cursor keys to select this volume control, then use the up/down cursor keys to change the volume (or press "M" to toggle the mute on/off).

And just to underline the point that in Linux there are many ways to do the same thing.
From Menu>Sound&Video>PulseAudioVolumeControl
Select the playback Tab and move the System Sounds slider.

BTW: With Pulse audio volume control you can set the volume of every active application. Each application has its own slider providing it is currently active and is pulseaudio aware.

However, on my laptop, the system sounds slider does not control the volume of the beep...

Strangely, I encountered this problem when I installed Mandriva 2010.0, but not when I installed Mageia. Audio in Linux still seems to be a bit hit and miss.
