New user Need lower panel

Postby richg1998 » Nov 21st, '12, 04:53

New user here. Installed Gnome fairly easily. That is the desktop I have used for some time.
Desktop PC, 3.2G, CPU and 2GB RAM. Six possible different drives by unplugging and plugging in a different one.
The first boot said something about Gnome 3 and then I think I saw Gnome 2. Never saw this again.
I would like a traditional panel at the bottom. I cannot seem to move the panel down. I left clicked and right click all around the panel to try to drag it down and no joy. I see a pop up menu on the left or right sidee.
A search said to click on the edge I believe but did not work.
I have Macular degeneration in my left eye and the panel at the bottom of the 19 inch LCD display is much better for me.
Thanks.

I'm guessing you're using auto-login at startup?

If so, when you start your system, go to your name in the upper right, click and select "log out" instead of shut down or reboot. When you get to the login screen, in the lower right of the login dialog, you'll see an icon that looks like a pencil on a piece of paper. Click that and select Gnome classic, then click on your userID and see if that gives you what you need.

I should point out that this will be, at best, a temporary fix--the Gnome developers announced a few weeks back that they will not be supporting Gnome Classic mode in future releases.

One other bit of information you need if you want to customise the panels in GNOME Classic mode (more commonly known as Fallback mode) is that you need to hold down the Alt key when using the right or centre mouse buttons, i.e. Alt+RMB brings up the panel menu, Alt+CMB allows you to drag panel items about.

Ok, thanks.
I will stick with Mint. It works out of the box.
