[SOLVED] KDE 4.8 icontasks / launcher annoyance

Postby wintpe » Nov 20th, '12, 02:13

OK quick rant, apologes in advance to anyone not involved in the descision making to implement this feature, I know now it was a KDE descision.

why cant some people just leave a perfectly good interface alone........

kde4.8, has anyone got any idea how to disable the new kde4.8 feature whereby the launch icon becomes the placeholder for the single app.

Im sure this is someones idea of forcing us all to make more use of tabs.

but I for one dont like tabs, disable the feature altogether in firefox, as ive got........ Sorry I had a perfectly good tab manager at the bottom of the screen, where
its been since bill gates and his crew thought the idea up.

please anyone whose managed undo this feature let me know, as my clonezilla of mga1 is shouting at me, i wont let you down..........

rant over

regards peter

OK a bit more fishing tells me that its down to plasma-applet-icontasks-4.8.5-1.1.mga2

but its a dependancy of kde.

what i want is to be able to disable it.

Ok i found a way to remove it following a bug report from someone
Who has the same issue with it, and the fact its been made a dependancy
Of something that does not need it to force its adoption.

In folling some of their suggestions ive stuffed my mga2 install and now kdm does not work and
Im facing re-install or downgrade.

I thought i could get on with this feature but its been grinding at mypatients ever since i updated to mga2.

Anyone any ideas how to reinstall kde to mga2 defaults including kdm without a fresh install.

Re: kde 4.8 anoyance

FWIW, this is covered in Errata: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_2_Err ... orm_Issues
second point (well at least it is partly covered)

I don't like that stuff, too and also replace the default launcher and task switcher back to the classic one.
But there's no need to remove those packages, you only need to replace the plasmoids from the taskbar,
nothing more, nothing less.

Thanks Doktor
yes thats fixed it in its entirety.
damm anoying to have these features thrust on you as the default,

I always regarded mageia as a conservative distribution that removed all the unnessasary pop ups and twirling eye candy.

its a shame they seem to be going the way of fedora.

would much prefer the classic panel is the default, and let people re-enable the eye candy when they want it, as it was in mga1.

Well, actually our KDE and GNOME maintainers try to stick to default upstream setup as closely as possible.
But you may report that as an enhancement request, you'd have my vote/comment.

Problem is, most newer users seem to like that icontasks thingie, so we're probably a minority?
