distorted sound in VLC

Postby wintpe » Nov 6th, '12, 12:39

OK this happens for me with both mga1 and mga2 64 bit.

I was hoping that the update to mga2 would see the back of this problem. (fresh install by the way)

if i run videos, avi's mkv's , mpgs through vlc i get a kind of sibulence over the top of the sound.

however other video players such as mplayer do not have this issue.

vlc also has this problem with plain old vanila mp3's.

using it with sound blaster audigy 2.

this has to be something to do with the audigy as another mga1 PC with different sound card does not have this problem.

Have you tried changing the output method in vlc>audio preferences. You may find switching between Alsa and pulse makes a difference.

And asked the other way around, any change to Mageia default sound setup in between or at all, like disabling pulseaudio or something similar?
I remember some other users had problems with Audigy too: viewtopic.php?f=26&t=3767

this was a fresh install of mageia 2 64

the setup detected and installed everything

I have not modified anything. it is using pulse audio, and unlike in mga1 i did not have to frig around with alsamixer to make the audigy outputs work, which is a great step forward as that problems been there in mga1 and mandriva, for quite some time.

however symptom is same as in mga1 64 and i did try all the different sound options with vlc to get rid of it when i was running mga1 before this weekend past.

its re-appearence under a fresh install of a new revision is what is damming.

its probably something to do with overdriving levels, its just like the distorsion you would get if you were

overdriving a preamp.

Well, i have volume problems if two apps are open which have conflicting volume controls, in my case
sound from Flash player plugin and VLC. If i set the volume in one, the overall volume raises expotentially,
and only drops back to normal level when i just hit the multimedia volume control keys above my laptop keyboard.

Otherwise no real clue, maybe you want to check additional mixer controls/channels in kmix, sometimes
there are some togglables which cause things like that.
