Unable to install Mageia 2 successfully with Radeon video

Postby eldiener » Nov 4th, '12, 14:34

I tried to install Mageia 2. The installation ran successfully but toward the end I was given the message that support for my Radeon video card was in the nonfree repository but that this repository was NOT included in the DVD I was using to install. So I was told to add this repository after the install completed and I booted into Mageia 2.

Unfortunately when I tried to reboot into Mageia 2 I received a long set of repeatable error messages scrolling by in which I could decipher only the word 'Radeon' since it scrolled so fast ( Control-S did nothing to stop the scrolling ), followed by repeated messages of:

Failed to allocate:
size 5242880
alignment 0 bytes
domains 2

which eventually stopped and hung the boot.

Is there some way during the install to get the installation to install the driver for my Radeon card from the non-free Mageia 2 repository somewhere ?
Might I suggest that the non-free repository be included in the installation ?

Support for that is planned for the installer of Mageia 3. But if you have an internet connection, you can actually add the repository during installation.
You may need to provide the full URL if you only want to add nonfree, but it is possible.

For your current problem you may want to look at https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_2_Err ... rd_drivers

Depends on which mirror you want to use. Let's take ftp.nluug.nl as an example, base URL is ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/mageia according to http://mirrors.mageia.org/
The full URL for the nonfree_release repo for Mageia 2 x86_64 (64bit) would be ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/mageia/distrib/2/x86_64/media/nonfree/release/

It does suggest in the errata that setting video card to vesa, during install.

I did this this weekend when i updated my main PC to mga2kde 64 and then selected the non free and tainted repos after i had done the main software update.

this meant i did not suffer any issues when switching to the proprietry driver (nvidia in my case).
