[SOLVED] No Dropbox options in contextmenu of Dolphin

Postby Erik » Sep 30th, '12, 17:17

I just tried to install dropbox on my Mageia 2 computer. I am glad I looked at the forum first. It is not a simple thing to do. I installed kfilebox and followed the instructions on the wiki and removed libz.so.1. I do not know what I did wrong, but the result is incorrect. I do not have the dropbox contexmenu in Dolphin. Kfilebox finished unexpectedly every time and gave an error message. Why does this have to be so complicated? I also installed dropbox on an Ubuntu computer via its software center and there was no problem at all! What should I do to get a correct installation on my Mageia computer?

Greetings,

Erik.

Erik,

Are you using Mageia 2 with KDE or GNOME?

The package "Nautilus-dropbox" is for GNOME and the package "Kfilebox" is for KDE4.

The suggestion to remove the file (libz.so.1) mentioned here (and in the bug 3641) is to nautilus.

See in Mageia Wiki about dropbox. There is in the official repository of Mageia 1 and 2 two packages available for installation, nautilus-dropbox (to gnome) and kfilebox (to Kde)

    Kfilebox for KDE
MAGEIA 2 - kfilebox-0.4.7-3.mga2.i586.rpm - KDE front end for Dropbox
MAGEIA 1 - kfilebox-0.4.7-2.mga1.i586.rpm - KDE front end for Dropbox

    Nautilus-dropbox for GNOME
MAGEIA 2 - nautilus-dropbox-1.4.0-1.mga2.nonfree.i586.rpm- Dropbox extension for Nautilus
MAGEIA 1 - nautilus-dropbox-0.6.7-1.mga1.i586.rpm- Dropbox extension for Nautilus

Thank you both for your speedy replies.

I use the fully patched Mageia 2 KDE operating system. Having installed kfilebox I start it via the menu. The program ends with a window that tells me that kfilebox closed unexpectedly with the following error:

kfilebox PID: 16278 Signaal: Segmentation fault (11)

The error report is:

Application: kfilebox (kfilebox), signal: Segmentation fault
Using host libthread_db library "/lib/i686/libthread_db.so.1".

when I choose to restart the program the dropbox icon appears on the systemtray, but without the green or red signal. When I choose to "stop dropbox" from the contex menu I get the red signal. When I open the menu again and choose "start dropbox", I get the kfilebox error screen again. If I choose "close", the program closes; if I choose "restart", the icon starts again, but without the green signal.

I hope you know what the problem is.

Thanks again.

Erik,

This error also occurred in all installations of Mageia 2 that tested it, so I reported the bug 7216 and commented on the topic Error in Kfilebox in Mageia 2 (but it works).

Despite the error, It works, but only after trying to start it two or three times. Then it works normally.

While the error is not corrected, you must start it several times until it starts.

But this error does not occur in Mageia 1, and it seems that neither occurs in the Mageia 3 (cauldron - in development) (I'm still testing)

Thank you, Macxi,

I stopped and started kfilebox several times, and indeed it works now, but still without the contexmenu in Dolphin.

Thank you very much.

What is "contexmenu in Dolphin"?

You configured the dropbox folder location? (see here)

Right Click on the icon and go to "Preferences":

Click on the "General" tab, and enter the location of you dropbox folder ( e.g.: /home/user/Dropbox)
    .

SOLVED: No Dropbox options in contextmenu of Dolphin

Postby Erik » Sep 30th, '12, 22:50

Dear Macxi and Alf,

thank you for your help.

On one of the introductory pages of dropbox.com I saw that the installation in Ubuntu changes the contextmenu of Nautilus, and I supposed that the same would happen in the KDE variant, Kfilebox. Nowhere did I read that Kfilebox does not do this, because the service menu is to be installed via Dolphin's settings. This fact could be added to Mageia's dropbox wiki.

KDE seems to suppose that we simple users have gone through all settings and options of Dolphin before we need one of them and remember them when we do need them. This lack of documentation and help that makes us waste a lot of time while in other systems like Windows and Ubuntu everything is automated and simple, makes us long for some other system. The maintainer of Kfilebox could have inserted a window that advises us to install KDE's dropbox's service menu and how to do it.

As you see, I have added "SOLVED" to the title. I am very happy with the forum and all those qho help out so promptly.

Thank you very much.

Erik,
A good suggestion: add these tips to the wiki.
I've done a draft below, with the help of the tip of Alf.

alf wrote:dropbox service menu for dolphin can be downloaded and installed in dolphin: go to Settings --> Configure Dolphin --> Services --> download new services (not sure if all the terms a correct, i translated from german)

Alf,
Thanks for the tip. I had no idea it was this way, like you said:

1 - I went in: Settings --> Configure Dolphin --> Services --> Download New Services
Image

2 - Then I typed "dropbox" in the search bar and clicked "Install":
Image

3 - After I click "install", the file DropboxServiceMenu-0.16.1.tar.gz was copied the folder home/user/.kde4/share/apps/servicemenu-download/

4 - After unpacking, was created the folder: .kde4/share/apps/servicemenu-download/DropboxServiceMenu-0.16.1/

5 - Then I clicked on "details" and I could see the installation options.
Image

6 - I went to the directory /DropboxServiceMenu-0.16.1/ and typed ./install-it.sh as a common user.

7 - I did a first test, and gave notice that was missing some dependency

Image

8 - I check that were installed: python, kdialog and klipper, but only missing sqlite3

9 - I went in MCC and installed: sqlite3-tools-3.7.11-1.mga2.i586

10 - The second test was ok: the options of dropbox were integrated in Dolphin:

Image

11 - When I selecting option "Generate public URL...". a warning appears that the link is available on klipper:

Thank you, we appreciate your work, macxi :)

Now i have installed dropbox (kfilebox) on two mageia 2 computers.
It was a bit simpler than you describe, kfilebox 0.4.7-3.mga2 work nicely.

Sidenote: Dropbox 1.6.10 gets installed today 2012-12-28

Prereqisite: registered account at dropbox.com

I used the following method:

1) Install package kfilebox from mageia repository

2) Have it download and install binary, and "connect" it to account:
KDE Launch menu > internet > kfilebox
Now a dialog appear, downloading the binary
(it goes two passes to 100 % - first quick, then slow)
and dropbox starts
(the dropbox icon appeares in the tray, but let it be for now;)
the dialog asked for account, enter it, select account type (free is good),
it also asks for what name to register the computer under,
and if you go for default setup it will create folder named Dropbox in your home folder,
- or if there is one such already it will ask if it is that one you want to use.
Done.
Then the icon said starting... then syncing, then all files was in sync.

3) Right click the system tray Dropbox icon to check preferences (folder, speed limit, pause, etc)

To make it start each login, I had to:
4) In KDE systemsettings > Start and shutdown > Autostart
Add program /home/myhome/.dropbox-dist/dropboxd

4b) alternatively, if you want to have kfilebox in tray instead of dropbox: instead of 4) start kfilebox from them menu.
It will then autostart itself and dropbox (in the background) each login.
the system tray kfilebox icon work approximately the same as dropbox icon.
Drawback: the pop-up menu lacks pausing and dropbox verion number.
Advantage: no idea...
"Funny": i noticed dropbox updated itself to new version, then dropbox icon shows in system tray and kfilebox say dropbox is not running.
On subsequent logins i have both icons working.

5) Context menu in Dolphin:
I proceeded as per earlier in this thread, but only used
Settings --> Configure Dolphin --> Services --> Download New Services
searched and cliced install, done - It is working without command line work.
(I have not tried everything, and for encrypting folder listings it should require to install python-m2crypto)

Above is working perfectly on my sons mga2-32 computer that have been used much for gaming.

On my own laptop that is fresh installed mga2-64 everything works except i can not see the icon in system tray.
It was visible first time after kfilebox instelled it, but never since reboot or new login.
But syncing etc works.

Also, on both computers, unlike before when on mga 1 and running dropbox in Nautilus, issuing "dropbox status" or "dropbox status" instead of returning result now only returns the program is already running.

The solution at viewtopic.php?f=25&t=127 is not applicable as there is no libz.so.1 file.

EDIT: added about kfilebox instead of dropbox in tray, point 4b. EDIT2: updated 4b

The solution at viewtopic.php?f=25&t=127 is not applicable as there is no libz.so.1 file.

Good to hear that Dropbox have finally fixed that bug.

I have revised the Mageia wiki page to remove the instructions about deleting libz.so.1 and replaced it with text about how to upgrade the downloaded distribition.

Could someone who uses Kfilebox confirm if the text I have put in about the dropbox distribution being automatically downloaded when Kfilebox is started is correct?
I know it is true for nautilus-dropbox, but have not tested with kfilebox
Thanks

Yes as per my last post my point 2): when you start kfilebox it downloads the actual dropbox program, starts it, and configures using a graphical dialogue.

Since last post, dropbox have updated itself automatically, to version 1.6.11

- and the icon appeared by itself in the system tray, hooray :)

6) For LAN sync to work you need to open port 17500 (both UDP and TCP)
in your firewalls. ref:
