[SOLVED] File system and booting problems - help request

Postby dathrien » Sep 12th, '12, 01:35

All of a sudden my system froze. No keyboard, no mouse so I reset my PC by pressing the relevant button. Since then I have the following problem(s):
When booting immediately after I choose mageia 2 on the initial screen the following is displayed:
Code: Select all
Cannot open file alt_shift_toggle
Cannot open file alt_shift_toggle
Cannot open file alt_shift_toggle
devd[167]: cannot find module by name ='sky2'
dracut Warning: /dev/disk/by-uuid/8440f63f-3133-4055-b4a0-97633eb261be contains a file system with errors, check forced. (note line681 in dmesg)
dracut Warning: /dev/disk/by-uuid/8440f63f-3133-4055-b4a0-97633eb261be: Missing '..' in directory inode 336690.
dracut Warning: *** An error occurred during the file system check.

dracut Warning: *** to mount the filesystem(s), when you leave the shell.
dropping to debug shell
n: 0: can't access tty; job control turned off
(Repair filesystem):/#

e2fsck commands are not reckognized
By typing 'exit' the booting continues and mageia seems to work just fine, but occasionally it freezes.
When I try to run fsck from the konsole I get a warning that doing so will cause SEVERE damage.

Please advise: How can I repair the file system ?
Thank you for your help in advance.

boot into safe mode, then run e2fsck on each and every filesystem.

thats may/may not fix your system, depending how far the corruption goes, and what is causing it.

it maybe that the file system is to corrupt to repair (what disk are you installed on, SSD by any chance.)

ive seen faulty memory sims cause file system corruption in the past (no ECC, so if it writes back corrupt data then it furthers the issue)

but thats just one example of many things that could have caused this.

the ext3 or ext4 journaled filesystem is usualy very good at recovering from crashes, so when a file system goes this corrupt, i

have to suggest that somthing might be further corrupting it, hence giving an example of what.

I managed to run e2fsck and now my system seems to work. At least during the last couple of hours.
I still get the "Cannot open file alt_shift_toggle" message between splash screens during booting but there is no noticeable ill effect.
Thank you for your responses and advice.
