Do you have a back up of your important files?
If so, I'd do a fresh install, format the root partition and keep /home.
If you don't have a back up yet, I'd make one first (for instance using the LiveCD or another install on the same computer, if available)

Then install, but not with the LiveCD, because that one has issues with keeping /home https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6022
The DVD, boot.iso or dual CD are better to use if you want to keep /home

What's a dual CD?

the difference isn't clear :?:
[just fussing about the details]
some of the ambiguity of the docs is from them being thought about in a language other than english [french probably]
sometimes things read funny to my american eyes
& many times the docs assume knowledge that anyone needing to read them may not possess
the built in paradox of OSS documentation

I have a couple of copies of the music & image files I treasure as backup
I usually use grsync to move them around

I haven't really seen a noob friendly explanation of how to migrate home
there is something to be said for cleaning house when doing a clean install, purging all the hidden & configuration files

By caution use the below command which makes first download all packages to upgrade, this option is more secure.

Code: Select all
urpmi --wget --download-all --auto-update

--auto-update is no emergency command, and it does not magically fix any problems, that would be a false assumption.
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!
Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!

sure
it will complete an upgrade interrupted
having a box stuck in the middle of an upgrade, sure seemed like an emergency to me
