where to get additional octave packages for mageia?

Postby nenja123 » Jul 21st, '12, 23:26

I instaleld Mageia 2 (32 bits) to try it.

Using the software management tool, I can search for octave and I only see 5 packages there.

but octave has many more packages for it, such as octave-odepkg and many more

http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/3/ ... ave-odepkg

my media manager is set up to look at 'mirror list core release' and 'mirror list core updates'

my question is: how to find and install the other octave packages using the package manager?
When I tried linux mint, the package manager there shows all the other octave packages. Why does Mageia 2 only shows so few?

Can I point the package manager to other rpm database to read these packages from even if they belong to different distribution?

cheers,
steve

Nenja123,

Welcome to the forum Mageia ,

After you enable the default media of Mageia 2 (Core Release 1 and Core Updates 3, Nonfree Release 11 e Nonfree Updates 13, and medias Tainted Release 21 e Tainded Updates 23), If you look in Mageia Manager Software, in MCC, you will find the following packages octave:

    Mageia Core:

    octave-3.6.1-2.mga2.i586.rpm - High-level language for numerical computations
octave-devel-3.6.1-2.mga2.i586.rpm - Development headers and files for Octave
octave-doc-3.6.1-2.mga2.noarch.rpm - Documentation for Octave, a numerical computational language
octave-plplot-5.9.9-4.mga2.i586.rpm - PLplot support for Octave
    qtoctave-0.10.1-2.mga2.i586.rpm - Frontend for Octave

The same packages you will find if you look at Linux Packages Search

Well, that are the packages available for mageia. But have a look in the Mandriva repos there are more than 60 packages for octave present :o

Mageia currently has only the 5 main packages for octave.

If you need some additional extra packages like odepkg
you can require them following this guideline,
or you could help Mageia becoming a packager :)

My remark was not meant as a advice to you installing the packages from an other distribution. In general, one can do, but the risk to demage your system is evident. Thus follow tom_'s advice
