[WORKAROUND] Monitor settings not retained between boots

Postby RVDowning » Jun 17th, '12, 20:14

I have a dual monitor setup, with monitor 2 to the left of monitor 1 with both set as a 1920x1080 (Auto) resolution. However after a system shutdown and restart the monitors always come back up at a 1280 x 1024 setting. I set these monitors up yesterday. Monitor one is shown as DVI-I-1 as Position Absolute 1920, 9 and monitor two is shown as DVI-I-2 at Position Left of DVI-I-1.

Prior to yesterday, I had two monitors with a 1280 x 1024 setting, but about 50% of the time, after a system shutdown and restart, the leftmost monitor only would come up at a 1024 x 768 resolution. Also, sometimes the pager settings for the virtual desktops would be changed from my 3 rows x 3 columns setting to a 1 row x 9 columns setting.

I'll try changing the second monitor to Positon Absolute 0,0 and see what happens.

MGA2 KDE, ATI M92 [Mobility Radeon HD 4500/5100 Series].

I have a similar problem with my monitor attached to my laptop. The laptop comes up OK but the external monitor usually comes up with the wrong resolution. As I rarely shutdown, it's not a problem for me but I thought I'd let you know you were not alone.

After changing it to Absolute it worked correctly on my one and only boot since. I'll monitor it and report back. Thanks for the info. Seems to me to be some kind of timing thing.

It has continued to retain the setting after setting it to Absolute. I'll only report back if something different happens.

I originally marked this as [SOLVED] but I realized that it was not solved. When the second monitor is set as "monitor two is shown as DVI-I-2 at Position Left of DVI-I-1" then the settings are not always retained. There is a workaround for this problem by setting the monitor to an absolute position, but that doesn't mean that the original issue is fixed. It is still something that does not work right even though there might be a workaround for it by using a different setting.

A monitor connected to the computer will give information on what is the best resolution for it. This can be disabled somehow. I don't have my notes on it here, and it will be a couple of weeks before I am home again (work related absense). But i believe it's about disabling the EDID communication.
Of course you would then have to have an xorg.conf file to describe the resolution you would want.

All this is taken from memory, so please bear with me if there should be errors.

FWIW, with which tool do you set the display positions you mentioned?
