Mageia 1 upgrade

Postby swright007 » May 19th, '12, 05:42

I have Mageia 1 installed and it is working absolutely perfectly. I would like to know the best way to upgrade so as to keep everything running. I am slightly afraid that if I upgrade it will break my Virtualbox install. I have the 3 GB Gnome install disk and upgrade is an option with it. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Do you mean upgrading to Mageia 2?
If so then your options are
1/ Make sure all your online updates to Mageia 1 are up to date, and. when Mageia 2 is released you will see the update icon in the system tray turns blue and you will be able to click on it to perform a system upgrade online. The upgrade could take a long time depending on your broadband speed. Just leave it alone until it is finished. When complete reboot.

You may want to wait a few days after the release day before doing an online upgrade. The mirrors may be a bit overloaded immediately after release.

2/ You can upgrade using the Mageia 2 install DVD. NOT the Live CD Just boot from the DVD and select the upgrade option. Do not use any of the Mageia 2 beta or RC DVDs to upgrade with. You do not know what bugs they have that were fixed in later versions.

Your virtual box should be OK. The new release will have a new kernel. On the first reboot a new vbox module will be compiled automatically via DKMS. You may find the first reboot is very slow. Do not panic. It will be compiling new vbox or display driver kernel modules. Hit ESC to see the boot progress.

Yes... I meant upgrading from 1 to 2.. Thank you very much. I appreciate the warning and will wait until at least the release date.

Uhmm, but you are aware that you currently only have a Mageia 2 RC (release candidate) dvd, not the final version? You shouldn't upgrade to Mageia 2 with that DVD ...

Yes... I know that it is an RC deployment. If I wait, it would be best to download the final release version on release day. Thank you I was trying to get a feeling for how stable the RC really is. With all the concern shown, I will wait and upgrade with a download on release day ..
