[SOLVED] Bizarre Sendmail Problem

Postby Will94 » Apr 26th, '12, 00:22

A long time ago, I setup a GroupWise server to check it out as a low cost alternative to Exchange. I wasn't happy with it and soon set my account to forward to a webmail account that I have. Today I finally decommissioned that GroupWise server. I want the mail to continue to forward, and I installed a Mageia 1 server with the same IP address. I was trying to test it using alpine and postfix and kept getting configuration errors. I then removed postfix and installed sendmail. I can now send and receive mail just fine. However, I have one absolutely vexing problem.

My .forward file doesn't work. When I send mail to my user account, it never forwards. It just sits on the new machine. I can read the mail in alpine. A .forward file is so basic that I can't imagine what I've done wrong. I've got a file called '.forward'. It's a one line file with my webmail address and the permissions set to 644.

Does anyone have any ideas what I should try to fix this?!?

Thank you!

I changed my home directory permissions from 700 to 755, and everything is working now. I am almost certain that I've used .forward files in the past with a '700' home directory. I am the only person who is going to be using this box, so 755 is fine with me.
