radeon driver issue on boot - fglrx

Postby germulvey » Nov 24th, '11, 16:30

Hi all,
I have an install issue - not just with mageia but most current distros.
The issue is my radeon 6790 will not play nice with the oss radeon driver, I end up at a corrupt screen in nearly every distro bar kubuntu.
I have mageia 1 installed but need to add the fglrx driver from the terminal as I can not reach the desktop to do it.
Can someone point me in the right direction please?

in suse I could add the needed bits in yast and ubuntu via apt-get just forgot the best way in mageia!

Many thanks.

Ger.

If you have the online repos set for urpmi (including non-free) then become root in the terminal and type 'XFdrake' - it is the same tool for configuring X as in the Mageia Control Center, just working with ncurses, means, navigating with cursor and TAB key.

Easiest solution would be
Code: Select all
urpmi.addmedia --distrib --mirrorlist

Better would be if you directly specify a mirror that is known to work well and is up-to-date, like so:
Code: Select all
urpmi.addmedia --distrib ftp://ftp.mandrivauser.de/mirrors/Mageia/distrib/1/$ARCH

If $ARCH does not work, i.e. does not automagically select the correct architecture for the running system,
you might have to replace it by either i586 or x86_64.

Giving up on the radeon 6790 - replacing with an nvidia gtx550ti - hoping this will solve many issues.
Just the rtl8111E/8168B issue to overcome lol
