While browsing the basic/video subforum I came across the observation that kaffeine is dead and browsing generally saw that people were saying that back in 2010. I use it for TV only and have found it far easier than anything else to set up and run. It compares very favourably with me-tv. Never could get that to work properly and MythTV is a nightmare - ghastly immersive user interface. Kaffeine TV seemed to develop some faults but nothing I could not live with. There may be other workable alternatives but for the time being I shall stick with kaffeine. Just thought I would get that off my chest.

Kaffeine seems not really to be dead, as in, there are not any revisions any more.

Kaffeine is pretty much dead since quite some time, and there are some bugs since the port to KDE4.

I will next week upgrade our "family laptop" to cauldron and would like to grab terrestrial TV like i did on mga4 using kaffeine and a USB stick.

Sadly I've not got any feedback from KDE team, as I wanted to deprecate kaffeine and import plasma-mediacenter. Will ask again.

I understand the devs have more urgent things to do getting mga5 out. Just noting:
§ plasma-mediacenter is out in version 1.3 since summer https://dot.kde.org/2014/06/23/plasma-m ... -available
§ version 2 is due in december so i guess it is more efficient to add it in cauldron when mga5 is out, and then soon backport to mga5.

kaffeine is certainly useful, to me anyway. Easy to set up and it supports DVB-T2. And would anything plasma work outside KDE?

Oh, I did not know DVB-T is still a work in progress for plasma-mediacenter ( http://www.nikhatzi.gr/?p=45 ), so it is kaffeine for me.
IMO we realy must keep kaffeine then. (and if possible include plasma-mediacenter if things do not collide)
Or do something else in mageia support DVB-T?

There are other viewers, like me-tv, tvheadend, xawtv
You can also try mythtv, vdr, xbmc, xine, mplayer of vlc.

yeah it seems pretty much done for I suggest just using vlc as VLC it's pretty much the Swiss army knife of media players

I sat and could not figure out how to get vlc connect to my dvb-t stick...
Noticed kaffeine is packaged now for cauldron, installed it and it could scan and show channels.

In VLC -> media -> open capture device -> capture mode -> select TV - digital and it will show a box where default for Tuner card is set to /dev/dvb/adapter0 and below you can select delivery system, e.g. DVB-T or DVB-T2.

Although that is more meant for testing purposes, as vlc is not what I'd recommend as regular viewer application for digital TV.
Better use something like me-tv which offers scanning for channels, EPG and convenience stuff like that. At least that's what I'd use for DVB-T.

I've, also, tried a number of alternatives and find kaffeine to be the best/only solution for me to easily schedule and record up to two simultaneous OTA ATSC television programs on my dual tuner hauppauge hvr-2250 pcie card. I've set up an HP thin client to do this, for power savings, as I can leave this on for extended periods, unlike the impractical alternative of my 6-disk daily desktop tower. Currently, I run kaffeine 1.2.2-4 under Manjaro on that machine. Some more detail of that arrangement can be seen here: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r29713683-

Looking forward, absent an equivalent alternative, I would need some way, possibly another distro's rpm or build my own binary, if not a package from Mageia, which is kaffeine-1.2.2-6.mga5 on my desktop, tyvm, if I am to migrate the thin client to MGA.

Perhaps I misunderstand your question, but kaffeine-1.2.2-6.mga5 is available in the core repo. So if it is replaced that will not happen until mga6 at the earliest.

Epilogue: For some reason, kaffeine lost track of the tuner card in the Manjaro installation on the thin client and I suspected this to be one of the several things that seem to have gotten lost during the larger software upgrades. The firmware was still being loaded, according to dmesg, so I took the opportunity to install MGA5, along with kaffeine, and make the various configurations to get my OTA recording thin client station up and running. All is working well, thanks.
