The Big Manual

Postby tuxpenguin8 » May 24th, '14, 18:31

Hi,

I had an idea that there would be a big manual about everything about mageia and computer. I know not much about both. The documentation team apparently have a hard time making documentation. So to make a big manual possible, lots of people have to contribute, so new people can learn about computers and mageia. So this is to sys admins, developers and advanced users. I would like your help so we can help the documentation team do their job. It would be great if you shared your knowledge to help a documentation of it. So, I would like to know where you got your knowledge from to help this manua possible. So if you know anything about being an advanced user, being a sys admin, being a developer, and about hardware and how computers work, please share all your info and help the documentation team, so other people can learn about it in a massive manual. And if you know of any generic linux documentation or stuff about how computers work and about hardware please share them and contribute to the documentation team so everything is in a centreal place.

This is about the big guide: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=7658

Thanks,

You're putting the cart before the horse.

How would one gather this huge team to make this definitive guide to Mageia/Linux and computer hardware which you say would attract more developers and document writers when we're struggling not only to write/develop but to get up to date?

It is certain that any documentation will have to be extensively edited and updated for each new Mageia release. Since Mageia is an international distribution it should also be translated. This would require a continuing commitment by a very large group of people.

IMHO, anyone who is able and willing to contribute documentation to Mageia should join the doc team and help to maintain and expand the official documentation and the wiki:

https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Documentation_team

or write and edit wiki pages as a "free agent". The wiki is, in fact, the Mageia part of the "massive manual" that you want to create. It is where Mageia people share their knowledge.

There already exist numerous books and other information sources about computers and generic linux systems.

Hi,

I don't know how to get all the sys admins, advanced users and developers. But If they all work together to make an ultimate guide on a release, mageia will gain more developers and users because all the info they need will be in one place, so it would be easier to learn about mageia, computers and development. And one of the main goals of the mageia project is to have a smart community, if every bit bit of info was organised into a manual, so if you learn one thing it will lead you onto another, it would allow for you to learn quicker, and learn stuff that you should know to continue. And The wiki is the mageia part of the manual, but if it were organised into a manual it would be even easier to learn and advance to the next level.

If you know any sys admins, advanced users, developers, who you think may be able to help the documentation team, it would be great if they help, because help will make more documentation, and organised into a manual, allowing for smarter community.

Thanks,

Then spread the word.
This is the case since the start of Mageia project, and this is probably the situation for nearly all other open source projects.
And even if there was one ultimate manual about computers, Mageia, life and everything else - doesn't mean people will read it.

You know, we already have quite some good documentation on Mageia in the wiki and on http://www.mageia.org/en/doc/
But most people simply don't want to read for themselves, even when you point them to the documentation they will ask how to
do abc or how to fix the issue with xyz.

Hi,

The wiki is great for info on stuff but it can be a little hard if your trying to learn loads of different stuff about mageia. I fore one, are using the wiki to learn bash.

If you need some quick info, the wiki is the place. If you need to learn all the stuff about mageia, this guide needs to be there so anyone can learn everything about mageia and computers.

Thanks,

So if the guide should not be in the wiki, then where should it be then?

Hi,

It would be on the wiki, since the wiki already has tonnes of info, it would just be organised into a book. And it would come with mageia as a printable PDF image. If it is printable, distribution of the manual will be much easier, and there for Linux User Groups can use the, schools can print the off and distrubute them, making it printable and redistrubuting them for free, will allow anyone to learn, even if they don't have a PC.

There will be terms and conditions on prining the manual and redistrubting them.

Thanks,

This one also seems to have received good critics, and even mentions Mageia on the cover as a popular distro :)
