Mageia 4 Reviews

Postby yankee495 » Jan 24th, '14, 16:12

I have Linux News subscribed on my Google News and have not seen a Mageia 4 review yet. I see the same old stuff mostly, or sometimes the same new distro being written about by several people. I know Mageia has its fans but it would be nice if one of them was a reviewer that made the top Linux News.

I'm probably not a good reviewer because I am heavily slanted toward Mageia but to be fair it deserves it (See). I did find an article that you should read. I remember back in the day, when everything was new and you had to learn something no matter what computer or OS you chose, what great fun we had learning. Maybe we're just Geeks!

In the comments a guy says he put Linux on his dads computer and his grandfather's computer. Dad can't figure it out because it is too different from Windows while grandpa thinks Windows does it the hard way. One example he gives is grandpa don't understand why Windows doesn't have a repository system like Linux.

He likes being able to say, I want to do this or that and just install the software which works in most cases if you're not a power user. People like us might want more powerful software than is offered in the repository but grandpa finds everything he needs, while dad thinks it is too hard and can't figure it out.

I think dad just don't want to learn new things while it is all new to granpa and he enjoys learning to use the computer. Lately Windows has been moving things around and upsetting people, but they adjust and buy the next one. This is also one of my biggest complaints about Linux. It's not as bad as it used to be but they used to move or rename or completely replace tools etc and even I had to figure it out. People just don't like change I guess...they want progress with no learning curve so to speak.

I've always said if Linux had an earlier start or whatever it took to get people using it in the beginning they'd be like grandpa! It takes time to break Windows habits and now when I use Windows it is strange. It is not second nature to me any more. This habit breaking is why Windows users try Linux and go back to Windows...Like new shoes, they hurt your feet, fine, wear the old ones today.

Also in the comments a fellow asks what does "Valerie" do when she gets a virus or malware, adware etc? Is that easy for her too? Doubtful. Anyway, this was in the comments and I think the author totally got it wrong! Oh, he also says ChromeOS is what Valerie needs...but that is Linux, right? But not "Linux Desktop", right?

Well, it seems that this article didn't just catch my eye, but others as well. Haven't read it yet, kinda busy at the moment, but will.

Well, maybe that is because Mageia 4 doesn't exist yet? ;)
Apart from that your observations are right, can only confirm them, especially the part about grandpa and also Valerie and malware.

When my parents got their first laptop, directly installed Mandriva and later Mageia 1 onto it.
As they're not polluted by extensive windows usage, it comes quite natural - they got a web browser, email, video player,
burning program, DVB TV viewer, file manager, picture manager, and stuff to scan and print.
Only thing that's left from windows times are some windows games my mom got used to (you know, original solitaire and spider solitaire)
and teamviewer when they got some issues and I'm not around.

If I hadn't told them maybe they wouldn't even know that they're using linux

I understand Dok that Mageia 4 is not out yet, but a lot of times they'll do a review, maybe not an extensive one, but a review of the RC. I told ya I'm pretty fond of Mageia and I'm looking forward to some reviews. A few minutes ago I read the second article and wow, a lot of good points there and even more in the comments, again.

Like I said, I've been watching for reviews and I'll post them as soon as I see them. The NSA thing has a few people talking around me. I mean that people are discussing options and you know my answer. I am in no way interested in an appliance type setup like a Chromebook, or Windows, or a Mac. I've been showing a few people some of the things in Mageia, Apps and stuff and am looking forward to being able to link them to a review.

I'm going to buy my wife an SSD for her laptop and pop it in there with Mageia. If she don't like it I'll put Windows back, I'll HAVE to, ya know? This will be a cool little experiment because she uses Windows pretty much as an internet/email/Facebook appliance.

I have high hopes for Mageia 4, mainly that it may be the one that becomes more widely accepted thanks to more reviews, and of course its growth and maturity. I'm not sure "widely accepted" is what I'm trying to say, but rather more talked about etc. Everything I read there is a comment where someone sticks up for Mageia and says "what about Mageia?" In fact I've been seeing more than one and I think it is growing.

It seems someone did review the RC on February 1, 2014.

Verdict
5/5

Very much the distro to beat, Mageia has come a long way in the last few years to be one of the best versions of Linux available. The new additions make it even better for novices and veterans alike.

Here is a thread at overclock.net. They're pretty knowledgeable people over there and I'm a member :? but I had not seen this.

Thread title: Mint supassed by Mageia. What's so good about Mageia?

Just to play Devils advocate, What makes Mint so great that it can not be surpassed by another distro on distrowatch?

As of this post Mageia has moved to #2 on distrowatch in the last seven day time frame with 2281 HPD.

It's snowing good here, expecting about a foot...I'm going to spend the day digging into Mageia a little bit and maybe get on the ham radio for a little while and see what is going on around the country.

Just came across this review on distrowatch
http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue ... 03#feature
Unfortunately, the review is not good at all for the prestige of Mageia but the strange thing is that most of the issues that are presented as problems or irritating or negative in any case, are not "serious".
1) The reviewer was frustrated with the behavior of the default task switcher
He could easily think that like all applets, It has a settings menu where he could disable the "highlight windows" which caused him the "jarring experience"

2) The performance was sluggish with crashes of the window manager
I really don't remember when was the last time kwin crashed and I'm pretty sure that most of the Mageia kde users don't either. His hardware doesn't look like an old setup and
hence I don't know why he faced that bad performance.

3) The release felt barely like a beta
How is this possible when the vast majority of the most frequent applications including the DE are stable packages?

I just downloaded Chakra and I will really test it just to see if there's so much difference in speed between the two distros.

There may be. He is using an ATI AMD Radeon HD 6410D video card and is probably suffering from the "slow render" bug I found on my system.

I'm guessing "occasional crash, typically from the window manager" could be fixed with one simple link.

I did not read the whole posts but read articles mentioned here.
Here my opinions about GNU Linux or free/open source world:
GNU Linux desktop pcs should be dominant to desktop market if;
*There are pcs, laptops those do not enforce customers to buy/use Windows OS
    * Hardware manufacturers provide enough contribution to kernel or provide Linux drivers
    * Well, altough there is a progress in this area but game creators provide also Linux games.
    * A side affect to manufacturers or program (game) creators; a most common or unified package management in place.
    * Piracy is not so easy. Then with low/non cost of a Linux OS should bite Windows OS.
    * Most countries still not enforce Windows OS and Microsoft tech in education (in my country they enforce MS for example)
    * Most computing magazines, websites do not payed from MS and publish really neutral/useful information.
    * Most web services provide Linux support too...

Then it is a matter of taste for Valerie or grandpa to use either BSD, GNU Linux, MacOSX, Windows etc.
