As title, some will be picked for the closed beta.

There list of distros is small but hey. Thought they would have at least put the top 10 on distro watch in the list ;)

Pete.

Edit here's the Phoronix article. http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTIxNTk for some more info.

Update:

Team Fortress 2 is now availible to download. Works well on the alpha 3 release with the beta8 AMD driver.

Looks like egosoft(X univers series) is bringing the rest if the x3 to linux also. there after a linux dev. http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=329914

Steam seems to gathering some attention by the looks of it.

Well installed the MG3 A2 to install the Steam beta as it needs glibc 2.15 or up. (note to self: Must do bug report about raid issue)

Right after some fiddling with the right 32 bit packages need to run, i managed to :D

Obligatory cube effect... ;)

Showing a blue-tooth headphones working with the mic test.

Seem to have done a good job to me, only issue is to get the voice going through the headset not main speakers with regards VoIP. :?

anyone else tried yet?

Applied for Steam Beta, but apparently I don't play enough games. :(

Yea same here, also seems if you chose anything other than ubuntu 32bit you wasn't likely to get picked, seems am to honest and picked other from the list and 64 bit.
Which is the reason I chose to try another way. That's the beauty of linux though

Managed to put the world of goo demo in with no probs, Tried TF2 and there server seems overloaded, Cant think why

Would be interesting if they could tell us how many actually logged in with the Linux client though.

Nice! Thanks for letting us know. I'll go fill out their survey. Maybe twice since I use Mageia at home and Ubuntu at work. I can game at work right? ;)
The only Steam games I have are Potral 1/2 (works great in wine) and Arkham City/Asylum (doesn't), but still, it'd be nice to get a linux client. I might play more games then since I won't have to reboot to windows to do it!

Really? I tried Portal 1 back on Mga1 in WINE and it didn't work at all. Eventually I gave up and installed the client on a Windows computer at work (we can game at work, right? ;) )

Hmm, odd. I never used Mga1, so I can't speak to that. But I had it working in both Mandriva 2011 at home and Ubuntu 10.04 & 12.04 at work. I did have some difficulty with it in Mandriva, but updating to the latest ATI drivers and tweaking some wine settings fixed it. But then I've never gotten anything working in wine without tweaking some settings first. :P

Well, maybe you play the wrong games :) Apart from installing required stuff like DirectX, .NET, XNA or Visual C runtimes and such,
i think Wine runs many games fine out-of-the box. And scanning through Wine AppDB Portal and Portal 2 did both get really good ratings.
Which is not surprising as Halflife 2 also is supported really well.

That's great!
But what do we do with a deb package?
It looks like it's preconfigured for Ubuntu 12 with a 32 bit architecture. I'm not sure if there are any static binaries that we could use.
Maybe someone with more devel savvy can do something with it.

Download the .deb pakkage.

Code: Select all
urpmi alien

Code: Select all
alien Steam.deb

This converts it to a rpm pakage.

After that install produced rpm :D

There is some 32 bit packages that is also need. If on 64 bit, I had a list but don't seem to find it ATM. sorry. I'll keep looking.

not in the beta my self, tried the above the first day beta was started. and it just worked, including start menu entries.

Once installed start by (in a console)
Code: Select all
steam steam://open/friends

At first I started via the menu, it will state your not part of the beta. Just close an do the above command.

found it :D Added an attachment for the Ubuntu to Mageia 3 packages.

Well, maybe you play the wrong games :)

Entirely possible. ;)

The only games I think I've played in wine are Starcraft, Prince of Persia 3D, Guild Wars, Spore, and Portal 1/2. Maybe a few others. And I think most of my tweaking was registry settings because I have an ATI video card.

If the steam linux beta requires packages from Mga3, I won't mess with trying it out just yet. And no real need since steam+wine is working well at the moment for the games I play. But this alien thing sounds pretty cool though. Never heard of that before, it could come in handy...

No, it probably does not require Mageia 3 packages. Also, all of the games you mentioned are supported really good in general by wine :)

Any one else trying the beta on Mageia, they've sent another 5000 invites out.

Not got one though.... :(

Seems to run pretty well. I have only noticed few times parts of text going blue, but other than that the client is solid.
Installed some games using the Steam keys from Humble Bundle namely:
Amnesia
Cogs
Darwinia
Osmos
Space Pirates
Steel Storm
Uplink
World of Goo and
Penumbra Overture.

Other than Steelstorm and Penumbra (some tweaks required) everything worked fine. Of course you can add the already existing games in your system. It looks and feels the same as the Windows version.
For a beta it is quite good.

Well, which one of these does not run with Wine, out of curiosity?

I don“t know...probably all of them could run in wine. Steam itself runs pretty good in wine (although very slow), minor tweaks required here and there.
There is a nice boost in performance with native Steam on relatively modest computers. While native Amnesia (Steam or not) runs just fine, through wine is too slow for my PC. Probably with a powerful computer/videocard the problem is solved but cannot say for sure.

Anyway, for the moment Steam brings almost nothing new compared with Desura.

Well that are rly good news ;)

Does anyone got a rpm list for Mageia 2 (like the one for Mageia 3)?

That would be awsome.

Well, if all dependencies are available on Mageia 2, just take the list which was posted earlier, and remove the version information and the distsuffix.
It should then become more universal, untested and without guarantees:

Code: Select all
libturbojpeg libcurl4 libogg0 libpixman1_0 libSDL1.2_0 libtheora0 libvorbis0 libvorbisenc2 libvorbisfile3 libcairo2 libcups2 libdbus1_3 libfontconfig1 libfreetype6 libgcc1 libgcrypt11 libgdk_pixbuf2.0_0 libglib2.0_0 libgtk+2.0_0 libnspr4 libnss3 libopenal1 libpango1.0_0 libpng12_0 libpng12_0 libpulseaudio0 libstdc++6 libx11_6 libxext6 libxfixes3 libxi6 libxrandr2 libxrender1 libzlib1

thx i tried that.
But steam tells me that glibc 2.5 is required. I have 2.4 installed. Is there anyway to upgrad only this package?
I dont wanna upgrade the whole distribution (got a very slow internet connection ;)

Thx and Regards,

Upgrading glibc (GNU C library) nearly means upgrading the whole distribution, as every package needs to be rebuilt against newer glibc.

That's why i used Mageia 3 alpha as per second post. Its easier than the other option ;)
