Edit: to clarify use of version/release :)

As an example: dbus-1.6.18-1.7.mga4
dbus = name
1.6.18 = version
1 = release
7 = subrel (subrelease, used for version updates on released distros)
.mga = distsuffix
4 = distro_release

If that's what you wanted clarification for :)

I was trying to relate the information in my post to what MageiaUpdate shows. IIRC in MageiaUpdate the release and subrelease are concatenated in the "Release" column (along with the distro suffix and release). :)

Well. This bug hit me too but a not clean logout (as switching off by pushing the power-off button on the computer) fixed it I didn't care for it that much (SuSE died on me with kernel faults all the time and didn't boot except in safe mode so IMPROVEMENT! \o/). Yeah. I'm not much of a use. ^^;

Re: Recent update causing slow login

I updated to the .6 version a while back and it seemed to fix the problem, but the problem is back. I rebooted into run level 3, and then did startx, all is well. Tried to update to the .7 version, following jkerr's instructions, using urpmi. I get the response that the files aren't there. Repeated the 2 commands half a dozen times, same result. Checked for typos on the command line each time.

I tried the 'Install and Remove Software' GUI, saw the .7 versions, but couldn't select them. Each had an orange circle with a horizontal bar through it. The IaRS GUI told me I need to select some packages.

Is there any fix for this problem?

For the time being, I'm going to set mga4 to boot to run level three on startup, and then manually start KDE with startx

TIA,

Joel

My first thoughts are:

1: Try a different mirror
2: Have you removed the black listed rpm's from /etc/urpmi/skip.list

The reason the command I listed no longer works is that the .7 versions have now been released as official updates and so are no longer in the testing repo. You see the orange icon because you already have those packages installed and they cannot be removed.

The only way to fix things for now is to downgrade to the .3 version as explained earlier in this thread. Make sure that you use the appropriate command - depending on whether you have a 64 bit or 32 bit Mageia.

Please comment in the bug report that you are having this problem again. (It seems that you are not alone.)

dbus-1.6.18-1.8 packages are now available in /core/updates_testing. In addition to a security fix, these restore the timeout setting to 30 seconds - the same as dbus-1.6.18-1.3.

I Used the other fix. I set systemd to the equivalent of starting in run level 3. Login, do startx, and it works. My update manager doesn't show any new dbus updates, or or any updates what so ever. I used to get a few updates a week, haven't since the dbus problem reared its ugly head. Used to be I'd get a little icon on the task bar saying there are updates for my system, but no more.

I don't know what's going on, but will give it some time. If Mageia can't be fixed, I'll move on. I like Mageia because it is like a modern version of Mandrake, the first Linux distro I used, (v. 6, I believe.) Easy to install, easy to use. Bottom line: I wouldn't recommend Mageia to anyone. A major bug is still only in testing, after a month? The first fix didn't fix the problem, and no stable update is is available?

I appreciate all the advice, but in the end I want a system that works. I should be able to boot into the systemd equivalent of run level 5 without a problem.

The problem is difficult to fix - it is intermittent and affects only a very small subset of users.

The 1.7 version was released as an official update only after users reported that it fixed the problem. However, those reports turned out to be premature. The 1.8 version is now being tested, but it is important to wait until there are definitive reports from testers that it does indeed fix the problem.

You can help by testing the 1.8 version and reporting if it fixes the problem for you. If you wish to test these packages execute the following two commands in a root terminal:
Code: Select all
urpmi.update "Core Updates Testing"

and, on a 64 bit system:
Code: Select all
urpmi --media "Core Updates Testing" dbus-1.6.18-1.8.mga4 lib64dbus1_3-1.6.18-1.8.mga4 dbus-x11-1.6.18-1.8.mga4

on a 32 bit system:
Code: Select all
urpmi --media "Core Updates Testing" dbus-1.6.18-1.8.mga4 libdbus1_3-1.6.18-1.8.mga4 dbus-x11-1.6.18-1.8.mga4

You do NOT need to activate the testing repo's.

Mageia is built and maintained entirely by volunteers and depends on users to help in testing.

So far, so good on the testing of the 1.8 version after two days. However, problems with the 1.7 version on my problem machine didn't show until after nearly a week, so the test must continue for at least that long to be definitive. As for my machine that showed problems with the 1.4 version but didn't with the 1.6 version, that continues to work just fine using the 1.7.

Same sort of machine and identical problem. But this solution does not work.

Code: Select all
[root@localhost ~]# urpmi --media "Core Updates Testing" dbus-1.6.18-1.6.mga4 lib64dbus1_3-1.6.18-1.6.mga4 dbus-x11-1.6.18-1.6.mga4
Pas de paquetage nommé dbus-1.6.18-1.6.mga4
Pas de paquetage nommé lib64dbus1_3-1.6.18-1.6.mga4
Pas de paquetage nommé dbus-x11-1.6.18-1.6.mga4

The 1.6 version is no longer in the testing repo. Use the command in:

Hi Jim,

I followed your instructions from your Nov. 12 post. It doesn't work. The second command fails.

Booting to run level 3 works, then startx iis no problem to me.

I like Mageia, so will stay with it. Thanks for your help.

Joel, I ran into that problem when I was using MIRRORLIST. What happens is that some of the mirrors are updating less frequently than others. If you happen to be using one that hasn't synced yet, the second command will fail because that database doesn't have the packages you're looking for yet. I solved the problem by changing from MIRRORLIST to the U.S. kernel.org mirror.

Hi, I am an upstream D-Bus maintainer.

If you have had this bug in the past, can you help me fix it for everyone by providing more information, or doing some testing for me? Please see https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14249#c54 for details.

(Please don't reply to me here, I probably won't see it.)

I am seeuing the same on Cauldron, Jim. Kernel 14 on Official doesn't support my video card. Every other distro's Official release has Kernel 15.

Then please provide feedback via the bugreport. Also, what issue exactly do also you see on Cauldron?
