Checkout Homerun Kicker - New Menu - Nice!

There is a new version of Homerun, Homerun Kicker and just like it sounds it is a menu. Read about it here: http://blogs.kde.org/2014/01/29/homerun-120

There is a Homerun in Mageia 4 but it is not the new version and you'll have to compile it. I don't know if you need the other Homerun but you can install it and have a look. It is a full screen version...reminds me of Metro and before you correct me, remember I've only seen it in pictures and that was enough.

This is a Widget with a background that matches all of the other Widgets! :)

Here is a link to the tarball: http://download.kde.org/stable/homerun/src/homerun-1.2.0.tar.xz

The instructions are in the file README.md. Basically you need your build environment working and I had to install kdebase4-devel and whatever it tells you it needs.

I did see a Mageia developer or packager on the last page of comments talking about adding it to Mageia but the fact is you can have it today.

Now I have to figure out Widget backgrounds, transparency etc...I think I used to know. Install kde4-style-oxygen-transparent, that'll get ya going.

You'll have to change the icon size to make it just a icon, otherwise it is about 4 inches wide. I think this was a default configuration error in KDE so it won't mess everything else up by changing it.

Icon size setting. The option is located in System Settings > Application Appearance > Icons > Advanced > Panel

The icon size for the Panel is set to 256! Change it to 32 and apply. I also had to remove/replace the Widget but a

logout/login may have done it.

On the left of the menu is favorite apps, just right click a program in the Homerun Menu and add to favs...took me a while to do that, too easy. I know some distros get stuff before Mageia but it is always (almost) possible to add them and I'll help you if I can. Get your compiler etc installed and it should be painless.

To resize it grab the top right corner and drag...makes room for more favorites. I'm not sure how you configure what is in the main part of the menu but it looks highly configurable.

I'm not sure what all you have to install to compile it. I installed them separately , but you can install meta packages for development I think, for C, C++, KDE & QT.

Go to Control Center and select Meta Packages, then Development and select them all, that should do it.

Extract the homerun-1.2.0 folder to your home directory. Then open a konsole and su root, enter your password and get to the directory homerun-1.2.0.

If you are in your home directory you would do cd homerun-1.2.0 and follow the instructions in the file I listed above, README.md

These are pretty simple instructions to try and help someone who has never done this before, you'll be glad you did. If you are new to compiling none of this may make any sense but it is really only about six commands to build and install it.

That's quite overkill. Alternative would be
Code: Select all
urpmi --buildrequires http://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/mageia/distrib/cauldron/SRPMS/core/release/plasma-applet-homerun-1.1.0-2.mga4.src.rpm

Sufficient should even be those:
task-c++-devel kdelibs4-devel

Totally unrelated, also a nice launcher that you can simply install via the Add Widgets -> Get new Widgets is appmenu-xml.
It's a mix of the classic menu but looks better, and has a search facility. Checkout http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=146098

Thanks Doktor,

I used to have to figure out what to install to get the compiler working and being there is no telling what I'll be doing I just installed everything and didn't have to worry about it.

Also, it's not that I don't like the menu in KDE, I use classic, but Homerun Kicker matches the other Widgets and has a search. I still have them both on the panel and I'll see which one I use most...so far I keep going to the classic, maybe from habit.

And Appmenu is really nice to folks...another example of the flexibility of Linux.

There is a new version of Homerun Kicker, ver 1.2.4
Here is the change log:

Code: Select all
# 2014.05.02 - 1.2.4

- Added a configuration option for Homerun Kicker's application name display
  format.
- Revamped the layout of Homerun Kicker's configuration dialog to follow KDE
  form layout guidelines.

# 2014.04.09 - 1.2.3

- This release enables compatibility with the revamped desktop search stack
in KDE SC 4.13. It is required for desktop search to work when Homerun is
used in KDE SC 4.13, both in the fullscreen version of Homerun (where
desktop search is exposed via the "KRunner" and "Runner: Desktop Search"
sources) and in Homerun Kicker. Existing user configurations continue to
work seamlessly, and versions older than 4.13 remain supported as well.

# 2014.03.22 - 1.2.2

- Fixed a bug causing icon setting changes from the configuration dialog of
the Homerun Launcher applet to fail.

# 2014.03.21 - 1.2.1

- Fixed a bug causing duplicates to appear in the "All Applications" section
of the "All Installed Applications with Filters" source.
- Fixed a bug causing the "All Applications" section to disappear from the
sidebar entries of "All Installed Applications with Filters" sources when
the system applications database changes at runtime.
- Fixed a bug causing sections of icons to overlap on tabs.
- Revamped config handling for the "Homerun Launcher" widget to allow vendors
to use Plasma Desktop Scripting for its configuration.

# 2014.01.27 - 1.2.0

- Added a new "Homerun Kicker" launcher menu widget. It's design is inspired by
traditional launcher menus, but augmented by a favorites sidebar and search
support powered by the Homerun framework. Much attention was paid to hassle-
free mouse behavior for maximum efficiency during use. The panel button has
support for custom non-square images. (Eike Hein)
- Added a new "Recent Applications" source that lists the last 15 applications
launched from other application sources. (Eike Hein)
- Added a new combined "Power / Session" source. (Eike Hein)
- Fixed a bug causing icons to launch the wrong applications while searching the
"All Installed Applications with Filters" source. (Eike Hein)
- Folder views now show the correct icons for .desktop files. (Eike Hein)
- Launching an item in a folder view no longer closes Homerun. (Eike Hein)
- When Homerun is used as a desktop containment the Desktop Toolbox is now hidden
by default. It can be toggled from the Homerun menu. (Eike Hein)
- The launcher panel widget for the fullscreen version of Homerun now sports an
"Edit Applications ..." action in its context menu. (Eike Hein)

Everything here:

If you can't figure out how to download from there here is what you want:
http://quickgit.kde.org/?p=homerun.git&a=snapshot&h=ed1cfc9d18189d3ced9922d3f9e7981e525a666c&fmt=tgz

I have it installed and working fine so far. This is going to make a great addition to Mageia 5!

Yes, but that is 1.2.0 which runs fine and is great if you don't want to compile it.

Also, one complaint about it. My wife likes games and with the default menu you have a categories, Board, Card etc which are very useful.

It does have a Name/Description option so that helps, but I don't think it worked in 1.2.0. It is working in 1.2.4.

So have you tried it out, what do you think?

Just FWIW, there's also appmenu-qml http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php/Ap ... ent=146098

Alternate launchers also packaged:
lancelot
simplewelcome
takeoff

Totally apart, KDE since some time also supports a global menu bar like e.g. Unity: http://www.webupd8.org/2013/02/how-to-e ... title.html
You have to install the package appmenu-qt
