[SOLVED] USB2 with VirtualBox client

Postby vzawalin1 » Feb 3rd, '14, 08:32

Thank you for Mageia, a refreshing experience after the previously used distribution which needed a lot of tinkering to get things done.

Right now, I have had no success in enabling USB2 support for Win XP/7 guests in Virtualbox 4.3.6 (Mageia supported version) hosted on Mageia 4.
After building each guest I installed the Virtual Box guest additions for 4.3.6 in each case, apparently with no errors. On rebooting the VM, the USB2 part of Devices/USB was greyed out in each case.
USB support in the XP guest seemed to be enabled for USB1 but greyed out for USB2.
In W7, no USB devices were seen in the file explorer even when selected in the Vbox devices filter. The devices list showed a yellow problem flag saying that the driver could not start.
I had connected the vboxusers, usb and lp groups to the linux user of virtualbox previously, but the USB2 capability in XP and no USB capability in W7 remain.
Any experiences or help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

For USB2 support you need to download and install the appropriate proprietary extensions pack:

https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch01. ... installing

it is available from:

http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/4.3.6/

Jim.
I had confused the VirtualBox extensions for guests with the hypervisor extension pack that you pointed me to. I have followed up and this has solved my issue.
Thank you
