Wine troubles with wine32 and wine64

I am busy testing Mageia 3 and so far it goes very smooth for the parts that works. IMHO, a good improvement.
However, I do need to use Wine and for some reason it does not work from a straight install. Neither the 32 or 62 bit version works - not a single component of it from registry editor, to the configurator to installing apps.
Is there perhaps a workaround? I could not get much on Google.

OK,
Sort of managed to solve my own problem!
I had to delete the entire .wine folder in my home directory after reinstalling wine32, to get it to work. the configuration however took very long so I had to leave it on that message box saying it will take a while, a ignored it. Eventually it went through.
Win 64 seems to be more trouble.

wine64 ist only for Windows64, usually not what you want.
Please mark the thread accordingly by editing the topic of the first post and prefix it by [SOLVED], thanks

If I understand correctly wine64 is for running 64bit Windows programs and should not interfere with the operation of wine32.

As this was a support question and not a Tip I've moved the thread to Basic Support.

It should not interfere, correct, but 99% of all users want wine32

And as this was a frequent questions before, and already answered, i decided to move it it Tips & Tricks. No?

Oops, I forgot to check why it was where it was.
If you think it should be in "Tips & Tricks" I'll not argue.
BTW: If you add a note to a thread when you move it this stepping on toes would be avoided.

Agreed, well usually i move it there once a thread has been solved and it sounds like a common problem or FAQ.
EDIT: moved again, is it better now?

I'll not argue but many have wine32 and wine64 installed and see no problems myself included.
This looks like "If it doesn't work just re-install"
With no debugging to find the actual cause.

On a fresh install of Mageia 3, I installed Wine64 with Wine32 support. My Windows application could not install. I got part of the splash screen of the installer (half an icon really), and that was it.
Installed Wine32 and that resulted in Wine64 being removed. Deleted the ~/.wine folder, then my Windows application installed normally. Only the application desktop icon was nowhere to be seen (had a blank ? icon). I had to download a .jpeg desktop icon and convert it to .png to have a proper desktop icon for the application. Anyway, all's well that ends well...

That's strange, installing wine64 will also install wine32 unless installed with urpmi and the --no-suggests flag and installing wine32 should not remove wine64.
Could you give us more information on exactly what you did in order to understand just what happened?

Sjoe, I am having troubles again!
With a fresh install of Mageia 64-bit on my desktop, I installed wine but only the 32 bit components and it was not even able to install the programs afterwards - although it worked on my laptop.
I tried removing the .wine directory again, uninstalling, reinstalling but nothing. It is so broken now litterally nothing of wine even starts. I am up for a total reintall of Mageia 3, which I will do if I get the time this weekend. I think I am going to try the 32-bit version though.
I wish I could more to find this problem, as I use quite a few small litlle apps under wine.

IIRC, I initially installed Wine64, which pulled in the Wine32 libs using Software Installer in MCC. Later I installed wine (32-bit), using Software Installer again, which removed wine64 and wine64-gecko.
My current setup:
- Code: Select all
$ rpm -qa *wine*
wine-mono-0.0.8-3.mga3
wine-1.5.27-1.mga3
wine-gecko-1.9-1.mga3
lib64kwineffects1-4.10.2-3.mga3
libkwineffects1-4.10.2-3.mga3
wine32-1.5.27-1.mga3

Well, instead of just reinstalling, you could give us some more information:
Which application do you want to run under wine, and which error messages does it give?

Doc,
Basically, my wine was not working at all on my Desktop wityh Mageia 64. I could not even manage to install apps.
However, reinstalling Mageia i586 and the wine is really robust. If I delete the .wine directory it configures itself again and I can install apps.
I managed to get Sugarsync running again and it took quite a couple of tries to figure out that Sugarsync could initially not determine the procxy server. That was solved by disconnecting the eth0 connection and connecting it again before running Sugarsync.
So, I will play some more and give feedback.

No need to reinstall Mageia if only wine settings are broken, just remove ~/.wine and try again.

On Mageia i-586 it works like a charm. On the 64-bit version it was a no go - on my desktop at least. On the laptop it seemed to work.

I can confirm, 32bit (or 64bit) wine on a x64 system has no working 3d support. The only programs that work are basic ones like notepad for example. Even with wine-tricks to install dx9, dx10, etc to get an application to see 3d support, still does not work. The i586 version of Mageia, wine works great, no issues, even with games.

That is not correct, 32bit wine working fine here on 64bit Mageia, including 3D support and running most windows games out of the box.
Apart from that "does not work" is not a really precise problem description. And this thread was never about 3d support.
If you have a problem, please create a separate thread as this one is already solved.

I can create a separate topic, but the short of it was that a system, fresh load of Mageia 3 (64 bit), then install wine32, there is no direct 3d support. Take the same system, format it, install Mageia 3 (32 bit), install wine32 again, the same program that failed in the 64bit arch, works just fine in the 32bit arch without any changes needed. I think that is what people are seeing. I agree, the 64bit arch should not be an issue, I have a Mandriva 2010 system (64bit arch) using the 32bit wine without any issues. Not sure what has changed in the 64bit arch of Mageia 3 to produce the issues or if it is video driver related for example? Again, a new more detailed topic can be created to address the issue.

Well, i've also just installed 64bit Mageia, installed wine (and after installing proprietary nvidia driver for performance and using winetricks to install directx, visual c++, dotnet and whatnot is required by recent games) and it worked just fine.

That would be the major difference for me, I didn't do any extra wine tricks. Just straight from OS to Wine32 to Application. Not sure why the 64bit needs the extra winetricks and the 32bit doesn't?

Neither do need them, it solely depends on the applications requirements, this is no difference between 32bit or 64bit.

So here's the solution I discovered if you go into install software and select all packages and not packages with gui. Then search for wine you will find a package named wine it's the front end for both wine64 and wine32 install that and your wine should start working

For what it's worth since M3 or perhaps earlier the packages wine and wine64 are not compatible. You can install one or the other but not both.
Also for what it's worth wine32 works fine without the wine package.
