[SOLUTION] Video Tearing for Intel HD graphics

In Mageia 1 KDE I had to use Compiz to eliminate video tearing in VLC (by enabling vsync).

It's nice to see that in Mageia 2 KDE the solution is somewhat simpler. Simply open System Settings: Configure Your Desktop > Destop Effects > Advanced tab, and check the radio button: "Use Vsync".

So in Mageia 1 vsync from KDE control center didn't work?

I don't remember seeing it when I first installed Mageia 1 almost a year ago. If it was there, then I probably tried using it at the time. I installed Compiz to fix this issue a month or two after installing Mageia 1. Never looked into it after that.

UPDATE

I found I was still exhibiting some tearing even with VSync turned on. Also had to uncheck "Use OpenGL 2 Shaders" to completely eliminate tearing. This forces KWIN to use OpenGL 1 (instead of OpenGL 2). This setting can be found in: Configure Your Desktop > Destop Effects > Advanced tab.

Are you referring to:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screen_tearing

I've been working with video production so long on
Mandrake/Mandriva/Mageia I've become dangerous to
myself. I also travel up to Tinsel Town ( Hollywood )
regularly for technical events like:

http://www.dvexpo.com/

The horizontal tearing you can experience in a
digitally created video can occur anywhere in
the production process. Including within the
capturing camera. The only way I can assure
myself that a tear is not occurring in my
raw video is to play it on my editing computer
in it's RAW format. And that's even a challenge
for my i7/16GB Dram/Nvidia powered editing
computer. Once I'm convinced that my RAW
video has no tearing in it I can then go down
through the generations of the video to see
where tearing has been injected into the video.

I've created completely tear free mpeg2 videos
and uploaded those to YouTube only to see
those videos polluted with lots of screen
tearing when played back even in the lowest
of resolutions ( 320/480 ). So you've got
to be careful when you start trying to
identify what's causing the effect.

I've become so sensitive to this that from
time to time I'll see a small amount of
tearing in a professionally created movie.
Saw one in an iMax presentation not long
ago. Almost knocked me out of my seat
and I almost asked for my money back.

I'm convinced that the only way to totally
avoid this kind of digital artifact is to
shoot, edit and project using 35mm film.
And some Producers insist on this, as they
hate Digital just because of this kind
of stuff.

Another digitally injected effect is what
is called studdering. That's when it appears
that you've dropped one or more frames in
the digital sequence. This is EXTREMELY
common even in a professionally produced
movie. 99.9% of the viewers never see it.
I see it all the time, unfortunately.

Some professional, digitally produced,
movies feature both tearing and studdering.

One other thing I just remembered

Some Producers are sooo sensitive to these
digitally induced errors that for EXTREMELY
expensive shoots/movies they'll do the first
takes on what can be called antique cameras.
They shoot on film first then scan that film
to digital. This is the only way to make sure
your first takes are completely digital
artifact free.

Some REALLY FREAKINGLY EXPENSIVE movies
shoot expensive scenes, or everything,
on 70mm film against a green screen then
scan that ( ARRI scan ) digitally. That
way they can be sure none of the digital
artifacts are on the original.

Think:

The Dark Knight Rises - 2012

Shot on Panavision Panaflex System 65 cameras
65mm film

I am using the same video to check on tearing. It is a video from youtube with some fast scene changes.

I was already tear-free in Arch XFCE w/Compiz, and Fedora 17 Gnome (same laptop). Thought I had it licked in Mageia 2 KDE awhile back, but a fresh post in the Arch Linux forum from a member using KDE showed me that this issue still existed with full screen flash videos.

I believe what happened when I first started this thread is that I got tear-free full screen videos with VLC (from downloaded youtube videos) by enabling VSync, but did not verify the quality with Adobe Flash when viewing the same videos full screen from youtube.

By unchecking "Use OpenGL 2 Shaders", I can now also view Adobe Flash videos without tearing.

BTW, I do realize that the quality of videos from youtube and elsewhere run the gamut.
