[SOLUTION] Intel 3945 drive problem - Firefox unresponsive

Postby bertaerts » Apr 16th, '12, 20:31

I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 with Intel 3945 WiFi and Mageia 2 Beta 2 x86_64, completely up to date.
Firefox internet browsing often results in timeouts.
Firefox telling webserver is down ...

How to debug this responsiveness issue?

By the way FTP works at full ADSL speed 4.6 Mbps.
And I don't have this issue in Mageia 1

Slow internet response can mean problems with Domain Name Servers...
My BBox modem of Belgacom should resolve DNS.
In Mageia DNS is put at 192.168.1.1 (address of modem).
I solved my issue by adding the 2 real DNS ip addresses in the settings of my wireless device wlan0.
Now firefox is very responsive!

May also be a problem related to IPV6. I' d suppose to disable IPV6.
for windows problems reboot; for linux problems be root

I have nearly given up on getting my intel 3945 to work. I found no simple answers to update the firmware to allow it to work. If you have been looking, you know what I mean. I now have 9 simple steps to get the update too come up as a software update.

1. Go to Mageia Control Center
2. Go into the Configure Media Sources for Install and update
3. Click add
4. Choose Full Set when asked
5. Enable ALL check boxes
6. Go back to Install software
7. In the search, put iwlwifi then press enter
8. You will now see multiple driver choices but choose 15.32.2.9
9. Apply and restart

You will now be able to configure and use your intel 3945 wireless card.

welcome in Mageia ragoetz :)

and thanks for this tip (moderators, what about move it in SOLUTIONS?)

I had a 3945 in the previous laptop and I know what you are talking about ;)

I'll try your tip in a few weeks, but I have a curiosity,
your kernel is using the iwlwifi module, the iwllegacy or the iw3945??

could you post the output of
Code: Select all
lsmod | grep iw

thanks again
