Steam on Mageia 3. Store freezes fix

Postby bartos » May 17th, '13, 03:41

I found after i installed steam on Mageia 3 through the repo, that the store would freeze when looking for games to buy.
Figured out it was flash.
Here is a quick fix https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1493-GHZB-7612
it is the same on 32 bit even though this page is for 64 bit.

In case the page goes down
Code: Select all
The workaround is to provide the 32-bit version of the Flash plugin to the Steam client. The following procedure details the steps:
Close Steam
Download the install_flash_player_11_linux.i386.tar.gz package from the Adobe site
Create a new directory (called plugins) in ~/.steam/bin
Extract flashlibplayer.so from the downloaded package into the new plugins directory
Restart Steam

Have fun

kinda of weird steam with flash, everytime i try to use flash with steam be it system install or method posted above, it just crashes all together ;)

I wouldn't mind but at first it did work when in early beta stage.

Its time they went HTML5 or whatever, never have liked flash but that's personal preference.

Yes, the same happened to me (Steam engine crashing when looking for games) until yesterday.
I did nothing in particular: only updated Mageia 3 64 bits and then ran the Steam engine, which opened a Konsole asking me for a sudo password (something I don't use). So, I closed the terminal and the engine loaded anyway, looking for updates. After a while, the Steam updating process completed and, when I logged in, it worked perfectly. I even bought a cheap game to test it and it worked as a charm.

Interestingly, every time that I clic to open Steam on my desktop, Konsole opens asking me for some dependencies and my sudo password. Again, I simply ignore that and close the terminal; the engine loads without a problem. This does not happen on my laptop.

However, the engine works on both machines.

yes, valve fixed the issue a good few updates ago, Down side is like you said, its wanting sudo at every start so to install some packages,

They need to do a distro agnostic version, not everybody uses *buntu/debian nor apt-get . ;)

Dont get me started on sudo.... well the way *buntu's have used it

One thing's for certain though, steam for *nix is not doing my wallet any favours ... :D
