[DONE] Why there is no search in 'Launcher' ?

Postby BlueHat » Jul 21st, '14, 15:59

Hi there,
I was just wondering, why there is no search in start?
I know that on some other systems this search feature actually asks some resources for indexing,
so i am kind of somewhat assuming it is to increase performance a bit?
Or is there something else?
Thanks,
BH

If you are using KDE, the "Run Command" can be used to search.

Alternatively unlock widgets, right-click on the "start" button, select "Switch to Application Launcher style".

There are various other launchers, check

Apart from that, there's a suggestion for Mageia 5: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Feature:Home ... ncherInKDE

Please mark the thread accordingly by editing the topic of the first post and prefix it by [DONE], thanks

This is really cool that in Mageia 5 we can expect exacly the nice HomerunKicker which is also used in Netrunner.
Thx

Well, that proposal was not approved for Mageia 5, so classic menu will be default.
You still can search via Alt+F2, the krunner dialog.

its ok, i switched to the other view u suggested and it works :)

the other day i was wondering, it looks like in the meanwhile 'start menu' has become an independent module of the desktop environment,
look for example at ms windows, you can easily install one, and there are even different versions,
in the same way ofc, even more advanced its on linux, there are several different of them, and HomerunKicker looks like a new fancy one,
yesterday night while falling asleep i suddenly realized, most probably very old mandriva hats are ok with classic style,
or is there some other reason for leaving classic?

Sorry but I don't get your question - can you please rephrase?

i mean, those who decided that mageia 5 would keep classic launcher, made this decision because they like/are ok with it i suppose,
(from the stand point of design) because for me the most single noteworthy improvement in win7 compared to xp is the search in start.
(from the gui perspective ofc)
or is there some other technical reason for it?

Reason is that it was not accepted as a feature for Mageia 5. For the details, I've posted the link to the discussion on the dev mailing list.

Hi there, here more food for toughts:
http://circlesoftrust.blogspot.be/2014/ ... -face.html

btw, i have been thinking that same way that i found that the only way i can actually finally use Mint is by picking the KDE edition.
Same way i think the Gnome 3 Mageia could be what fits my needs. :)

edit:
Mageia with Gnome 3 as a sort of somewhat stabler Fedora version. If you can call it like that.
