What is mageia generally used for

Greetings,

I have been using mageia since #1 and have before that I was using mandriva since 2010.xx.

There are a few reasons I haven't been able to contribute around here. I am very poor at the moment and cant even afford a new keyboard(I borrowed this one since someone spilt drink on my laptop). Since using Mageia I have learned alot about linux, it has been the most friendly distro I have came across although I know that in the end its just another linux.

My laptop is a old toshiba dual core, nothing special about it at all except linux is its only system. I started with linux by learning about the package manager once I figured out how that worked things got alot eaiser. Then I brought a few books on bash and commandline scripting that I am yet to read, for the moment I am dedicated to learning C++ which I just love learning.

Funnily enough understanding some linux has helped me to better understand my view of programming. When I was 15 or 16 I remeber trying to learn C++ code and just getting completely frustrated, now ten years later my maths is still pretty crap and my gramma skills have gone backward 100fold but I can look at the c++ code and understand it alot better, I thank linux for that being able to understand a couple things has helped my mind to map out things I didn't think I was capable of learning.

Like I said I am very poor at the moment. Most of my free time is dedicated to learning C++. I expect that to take another year or two before I start getting somewhere useful to myself. I have no quailfications in anything. I just like computers and if I could have it my way I would be doing it fulltime all the time.

Enough ranting anyway I have to give the keyboard back now. My question is:

I noticed that mageia has been ranked number 2 on distrowatch, I was just wondering what exactly mageia is mainly used for....desktop or....and what are mageias strengths because thats what im having trouble with googling.

thank you very much

The strengths are that it is easily available and simple enough for novices, here the Mageia control center comes into play where tools and wizards for many tasks exist, also for advanced stuff. Then there's a great selection of packages, also many desktops which are equally integrated (GNOME, KDE, LXDE, XFCE, E17, razor-qt and also some window managers for the purists) but it is also useable for servers, as it respects your changes and you can easily adjust settings, and they will not be overwritten.

Ahh, well and a nice community :)

That would make a goot poll actually... :ugeek:

Mageia is my favorite Desktop Distro by a long-shot. I still like RHEL & clones w/o X11 for servers though.
