A friend upgrades from Mageia 1 -> Mageia 2

Postby wilcal » May 27th, '12, 23:30

I had completely forgotten about this. As a
favor for a friend last summer I replaced
their WinBlows XP with Mageia 1. This is
an older Dell Celeron cheapy desktop. She
had gotten into the habbit of routinely
allowing updates unless I told her in
advance to hold up for a few days. Of
course that's never happened.

So I suspect in the last couple days she
got a notice on the screen of the upgrade
from Mageia 1 -> Mageia 2 so why not she
just did what came naturally and as she
tells me after a couple hours it went
through the upgrade. She then rebooted
the system and of course it works just
fine, if not a little snapper. It also
left her Gnome 2 GUI intact.

Nice job to the upgrade team.

This is the same sort of amazing report I seem to be hearing from every direction at this point. So far I have yet to hear anyone complain of a failure on a network upgrade. - George

Wow!

I must say, even through I was spoilt with the stability of Linux for 10- years, I never attempted an upgrade as it did not work on any of the flavours I used.

Impressive Report.

There's more.

I finally had a chance to look at this
system and indeed it transitioned from
Mageia 1 -> Mageia 2 just fine. As I
said this is an older Dell desktop
so therefore it would not support
Gnome Shell. But, different then
I stated above, the upgrade took
the GUI from Gnome 2 -> Gnome 3 Fallback
and she's perfectly happy with that.

When I install a Mageia system I always
start with KDE. This Mageia 1 system
was initially installed with KDE4.6.3 and
then when everything was installed and
working I used the MCC to install
task-gnome. The user then used Gnome 2.
The upgrade also upgraded KDE from
4.6.3 -> 4.8.2 just fine and that is fully
usable.

Mind to give some more details about how you installed it with KDE3?

I get my KDE versions mixed up sorry.
I guess Mageia 1 was KDE 4.6.3 and Mageia 2 is 4.8.2.
They are very different experiances on the GUI.
I've corrected my post.
