And please use the torrents whenever you can to reduce the load on the mirrors so people can use them to install packages and stuff ...

Absolutely essential stuff to read before, during but at least after the installation: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_2_Errata

As the public release is planned for 20:00 UTC, you'll have to wait at least ~40 minutes. Website should be updated in time for release.

Sometimes you learn that patience is a virtue ...

FWIW, here the download is already running via torrents, Dualarch CD is long complete, and both DVDs are halfway done. Not that i'd have time to install it in the next few days, but trying to support torrent downloads by seeding, as earlier with Mandriva (some will remember the EarlySeeders program)

I'm really not a huge fan of Gnome Shell. Far too many clicks required to do common tasks (like switching tasks).

Xfce and Lxde don't really fit my needs either (it doesn't look to be possible to configure either of them to not take over the root window).

On the bright side, this finally spurred me to build some Mageia RPMs for sawfish (which is still the wm that least gets in my way*; the few months I was stuck with metacity while using Mageia 1 were hellish) and its dependencies**. Right now, I'm running straight sawfish (no desktop environment). Next project is probably going to be to build MATE so I get the old-style gnome panels and applets etc.

Otherwise the upgrade went really smoothly: digging out the documentation to get my b43 wifi working again was probably the most painful part. Porting over my old inittab settings to the new systemd setup is really the only thing remaining to do.

*: at least until I get around to writing my own window manager in Perl...

**: if I had any idea how to actually go about contributing those to the community (I contributed a few original packages and worked on several more for Mandrake, way back in the day)...

Hi,

I'm still just testing the installation of "Mageia 2" in virtualbox and everything is stable and beautiful. Congratulations to Mageia Team for the great work!

I send below the link some screenshots of the installation (in virtualbox) of "Mageia 2 LiveCD KDE" (en - english):
https://picasaweb.google.com/1063734775 ... iveCDKDEEn

sequence of slides (en)

Link screenshots of install of Mageia 2 LiveCD KDE (pt_Br portuguese of Brazil):

sequence of slides (pt_br)

Note: I concluded the installation of "Mageia 2" in an HD. Everything went very well. He recognized all the hardware (video card nvidia) and did not appear any error. I configured LibreOffice and several others.

Congratulations to "Team Mageia" and thank you :)

Congratulations on a fantastic job. Mageia 2 runs great for me, much better than poor old Mandriva 2011. I'm sorry to see Mandriva fall by the wayside as I used it from the first days of Mandrake Linux, but I'm glad to see this fork take over. For me, Mageia 2 works much better than the first version. Everything "just works". :D

Runs very well. :)
But I agree that, like other major Distros, it would be better to have grub 2 on board ... ;)

Why do you need grub 2? Are you running a dual or triple boot? If so, it's a simple matter of adding entries to the menu.lst.

Hats off to all the folks involved in this most excellent release ... my old laptop died and I was a little concerened about the new one ... using dual ATI cards on the new laptop where I had a nvidia graphics card in the old system ... once installed I went to MCC and configured the video card ... mageia handled everything 100% !! Great job everyone!!

I have a dual-core HP laptop that's always the first machine I install any new distro on.

The three words that best describe my experience...

Slow. As. Molasses.

Navigating between two screens in MCC takes over a minute. And yet, Mandriva 2010 flies on this same machine.

First impression = last impression.

Actually I have the Windows bootloader in charge and select the Distro by EasyBCD ...
Anyway, Grub legacy is no more supported ...
Moreover, in my opinion, it would be simpler to use the same tool on different distribution, like, for instance, the change to systemd (now on Fedora, openSUSE and Mageia) and so on ....

I am really pleased with this distribution. :D Using it on a HP 8650w laptop and everything went smoothly at installation, and if anyone has tried to install linux on this laptop they will know that is high praise indeed and more than I can say when trying to install other Linux distributions.

I have Gnome 3.4 as the desktop and to be honest the look and feel is OK. It doesn't crash and its not from Google or Apple.

If you would pardon me, & please no one take offence. But personally looking towards the future, and hoping this distribution takes on some French "joie de vivre", in a similar style to watching a french rugby side in full flow.
