Nice stuff in Mageia2

Postby djennings » May 11th, '12, 00:38

Up to now I have been concentrating on looking for bugs in Mageia2, but now as we get close to release I have started noticing there are some nice new enhancements as well.
One that has caught my eye is x2go which I had never heard of before.

It is a remote desktop like vnc or freenx and is based on nx technology. But while freenx is a pig to set up, x2go works virtually out of the box. Install it with urpmi on the comand line and it tells you the two commands to type to set it up and start it off, and that's the job done!

x2go has been introduced in MGA1 and before it was packed for Mandriva 2010.2 (although only in the German MUD repo). We met the developer at Linuxtag Berlin (he was on a neighbor booth) and Oliver (obgr_seneca) did the first packaging of x2go 2 years ago (IIRC).

Our distribution has so many hidden treasures - you can't know them all! :)

I Installed Mageia-2 rc very shortly after it was made available absolutely AOK with no apparent hitches of any kind.
Some Points.
1. Yawp, the weather plasmoid seems to be a bit screwed up. When mounted it is initially near totally transparent. It does not set-up automatically responding to saved settings in home hidden files as it does in Mageia-1.
Also in Mageia-1 it was a default install but not in this one which is a bit of a disappointment but that is all.

2. Audacious, even though <skins> is installed it cannot be set for random skin selection when the XMMS style is selected, also the xmms style cannot be made double size as can be done in Mageia-1 with a setting choice titled <scale> which I feel is a need for a large monitor (24 inch +).

The following are not complaints or criticisms, just observations which might inspire the Mageia team to bring them on board.

3. Mahjongg-3D is not available.

4. The 2 packages, apcupsd and gapcmon which are for APC UPSs, that the great Adam Williamson introduced into Mandriva for APC Backups outfitted with USB monitoring haven't been ported to Mageia yet. I feel that they are far superior to the current back-ups alternative applications offered, are much more configurable and supply much more detailed data.

I copied the Mahjongg-3D, gapcmon and apcupsd from Mandriva-2011 and installed them AOK into my Mageia-1.
Neither the gapcmon or the apcupsd appeared in the Menu. I started them up using Konsole. After opening gapcmon I ticked the options of <Use TrayIcon> so the application did not shut down when I closed Konsole.
Mahjongg-3D didn't seem to have any dependencys and it did appear in the Menu.
I hope these 3 packages can be made part of Mageia-1 and 2 for others as well as myself.

I have noticed that a bug report notice appears at the bottom of the screen once my account opens whenever Mageia-2-rc is rebooted but nothing seems to be not working correctly so I just close the notice.
I suspect that it has already been reported as a bug so no need for me to add to the pile. :-)

Mageia-2-rc seems to be pretty solid at this stage (with all updates) with no noticeable problems which sure bodes extremely well for the final release in a weeks time. I am really looking forward to it. Great going Mageia team.

Cheers. John.

I have been running a competitor OS ..... It starts with a U. I like testing new flavors but up until now they have been off that one main source. I heard about this amazing new Mageia and that I HAD to try it. A bit skeptical, I gave it a go. Tonight I burned a live CD and took it to the office with me. I work at a hotel and the Wi Fi here isn't the best in the world. For instance, last night I tried to download the Live CD of Mageia and it said it was going to take 10.5 hours (at home it only took an hour)... odd... but ok. After getting to work tonight, I booted up and realized that I had accidentally downloaded Mageia 1 instead of Mageia 2 RC... well.. I tried downloading the version 2 tonight under Mageia and it, too, said it would only take about an hour. AMAZING, it not only ran my wi fi but runs it REALLY REALLY well.... Thank you for designing this miracle! I never knew my laptop could function like a real computer in this "Twilight Zone" that I work in.

Update.
I have just found that <apcupsd> has now appeared in Mageia-2-rc. Hopefully its matching <gapcmon> will be added soon. Thanks Mageia team.
Cheers. John.

Glad to see the improvements in Mageia2. I'm currently playing with a Tablet and see that the Bluetooth, Battery percentage and a few other things are also running okay. It is an RC, so best to check what you can if you have time, so that the release version comes out well.
