are blogdrake (bdk) repositories oficial ones?

Postby otto » Mar 27th, '12, 02:07

:?:
Dears mageia buddies,
are blogdrake (bdk) repositories oficial ones? They are supposed to be unofficial ones. By the way, can I add to the following medias without causing problems or another instability on my mageia?
"urpmi.addmedia --wget --update BDK-Free-i586 ftp://ftp.blogdrake.net/mageia/mageia1/free/i586/

urpmi.addmedia --wget --update BDK-Free-noarch ftp://ftp.blogdrake.net/mageia/mageia1/free/noarch/

urpmi.addmedia --wget --update BDK-NonFree-i586 ftp://ftp.blogdrake.net/mageia/mageia1/non-free/i586/"

Or you don't recommend me to use it? I appreciate your hints because many users ask me about the bdk (blogdrake medias). What about the bdk script called turning drake, Is It recommended, Isn't It?It's another stubborn inquiry by the mageia users. It's a third part script. Mainly the novices who can't handle with the terminals like it.I have not been recommending both of them. I'm afraid of them because I thought they could damage the mageia setup. What's your opinion abouth them? Please be frank and straight.I'm expecting your prompt reply as soon as possible.
Cheers.

Well, those are third party repos and their usage is at your own risk.
I don't know if the bdk guys do any kind of qa on their work and using third party repos you always face the danger of getting update problems with official packages.
So if you use them and a future upgrade to Mageia 2 doesn't work, don't complain here...

And what I actually dislike here: it would be far better, those packagers would help in the Mageia packaging and qa teams then to work in their own backyard.

As I understand, the blogdrake guys don't want to work in their own backyard.
They are already in a process to update and transfer their packages to the official mageia repos.
Some packages are already transferred, for example rawtherapee ...

So it's just a matter of time ...

cheers,
Bernd

They are working since last september on getting their packages imported into Mageia, check the mailing list thread starting at:

Which doesn't make the bdk repos any more official.
They are third party repos and you can use them at your own risk.

It also doesn't make them more unofficial as they are *sigh*
I've only wanted to post more information, i refrained from chiming in with the official/unofficial debate.

May be, I don't know. What I know: the main benefits of porting the blogdrake packages into the official repos are
- additional packages which are not yet available in the Mageia repos (increased number)
- blogdrake packages will meet the Mageia packaging policies
- blogdrake packages will pass QA of Mageia.

Blogdrake packagers could reinforce and support Mageia packager team, in addition to the above.

Blogdrake deals largely with "tainted+nonfree" packages that Mageias charter/repos do not handle yet.

They also carry some essential packages that have not made it into the std repos for whatever reason.
(partclone is my freind, beats having to run "alien" on Debian package or copy over binaries)

I'm personally thankful they exist, i just wish the urpmi install line was easier to google for as i'm testing and doing many installs on different hardware.

Well, the urpmi commands could be added to viewtopic.php?f=41&t=1985 or in a separate MAQeia, for ease of use.
But that is two-fold, as it would give the impression that those are supported in some way or another, and people will come here
when problems arise, no matter if you label them "unofficial/unsupported" here or whatever ...
