roll your own

Postby mindwave » Feb 21st, '12, 14:54

Team,

Im new to Mageia, but love what I see.

long time mandriva user, who like many started looking around when things looked shaky last year.

HOWEVER, there was a project I was working on w/ the NL group in '06 - 08 that was going AMAZINGLY well.

Then 'something' changed and everything stopped (basically MDV produced a commercial version of what we were doing so....

Im talking about the ability to "roll your own"

if youve ever used puppy the project was similar, in that you could stop at anytime, after you have your DT up and running and stable, and with all the sw you want installed you could do 2 things
1) create a 'live' version of that that could run from DVD or USB, with all your own accounts and software
2) in the case of a catastrophe that same DVD coukld be ysed as a time machine ti restore your current desktop (apps and all) with just one icon

does mageia have anything like this? I installed it in a VBOX from my mAin machine and it seems good, but doesnt have the tool

any ideas

thnanks

You are talking about remastering a live CD or installed version? Nope, currently not.
But there are some ways do customize Mageia live cds (as most other live cds) maybe
you want to have a look at http://www.mandrivauser.de/doku/doku.ph ... madeiso_en

Maybe we should take a look (f.ex. at PCLinuxOS) as this seems to be a rather popular feature, at least
that's what i've heard over the years from several users, and i can comprehend that, as it's rather useful.
But will have to wait until after Mageia 2 release with huge projects like that.

doktor

thanks for the reply

actually when i was working on the mandriva version (MCNL) it STARTED as a way to remaster live CD's BUT A buddy of mine in the UK and I did some mods and actually allowed you to convert your installed desktop INTO a livecD with an install to HD version.

MY goal was disaster recovery,at the time duo cores and 64 bit was causing me to FFR on a regular basis and I knew that windows had tools to do the same so I figured linux could do it even easier (this was before UBU and the rest were rolling out regular respins)
