I can't leave the distro alone but I guess I'm leaning

I put it all back and it's working now, but I guess I wasn't happy with KDE's speed, looking at the number of the packages it comes with. I used the MCC un-installer and removed konqueror logged on as root and issued urpme -auto-orphan, I was hoping that things would happen. The worst being GUI would break. but the whole system broke and I had to re-install the duo set up the sourses and issue urmi task KDE4

Live and learn as the saying goes. That is one thing about KDE I don't like, it includes too many programs as dependencies by default. It's one reason some call it bloated. I learned to do a minimum type of install, which I currently have on Mga, along with Gnome 2. But the minimum still include too many programs you may not want.

Just a thought!

My first install of Mangeai-64 was from the dual CD, it doesn't have room for KDE, it has LXDE. it is very fast an doesn't install great numbers of Applications you'll never need, use, or want that only serve (in my opinion) to drag its seed down. If I didn't need to alter the mouse and keyboard spec's that's the one I'd use.

Actually the number of packages/programs has nothing to do with speed per se, only with the minimum amount of harddisk space needed.
If you would have wanted to uninstall kde you could have tried urpme --auto-orphans task-kde4 or you could also have asked before ...

I actually always have the intention of leaving the installation well alone. but I never do...

I don't want to UN-install the environment, just a few of the apps (some of them the bluetooth one for example) are for equipment I haven't even got. I suppose for out and out speed a SSD would be the thing.

I do not think that would be simple to do. They applications are listed as dependencies so it is not designed to work without them. Im sure there is a way around this but it seems it would be far more trouble than it would be worth. If you want more speed go with LXDE or XFCE (Enlightenment is great to). They are lightweight and do not require many dependencies by default.
