experience from 2010.2 for squeeze/drop/virtual box?

Postby rk_house » Dec 11th, '11, 02:29

I've used Mandriva (and Mandrake before that) for a long time, but now I'm considering moving to a new distro from 2010.2. Some of my most important applications are: 1) sqeezeboxserver, 2) dropbox, 3) virtualbox, and 4) dm-crypt. I'd appreciate hearing about your experience if anyone else has switched to Mageia from Mandriva and is/was using these applications. Can you install sqeezebox to mageia from the standard linux RPMs? Can you keep your existing virtualbox VDIs, for example? What about existing encrypted partitions, like tmp, swap and home?

Hi and welcome rk-house!!!!

If i were you, i would have chosen for different topics concerning the four questions.
This makes it easier to find back later, and greater chance that people give input.

Just an idea, have a good time around!!!

You are probably right that four separate topics would be better, but I didn't want to start out with a bunch of posts. Also, I was hoping that I would get lucky and someone else would have recently upgraded from 2010.2 and was using one or more of these applications.

I'm expecting live CD/DVDs for Mageia, Linux Mint 12 and Ubuntu 11.10 to arrive tomorrow. I intend to try out each and see how well they work with my hardware and these applications before committing myself to a new distro. Assuming that I can get Mageia to run with my hardware, I'll follow-up to my own post with my findings.

Initial test with Mageia Live Gnome CD went pretty well. I didn't find any hardware issues. I was able to mount my encrypted home. Didn't install to HD, so I don't know how easy it is to setup encrypted swap and tmp. I found package for virtualbox in the distro (actually newer than the one I'm using with Mandriva 2010.2 currently). So, I believe I should be able to use my existing VDIs. I didn't find packages for squeezebox or dropbox, but I believe I loaded the RPMs for those directly from their web sites, so I'll have to do that again. I did find a package for nautilus support of dropbox. None of this tells me how well the ugrade will go, but it looks like I could start with a clean install pretty easily if necessary.

Welcome :)
I too am in transit, step by step when i find time. mdv2010.2->mga1.
For dropbox and virtualbox see results from searching this forum.

Regarding install to readily encrypted filesystem, installer is broken for me at least (must file bug later!)
I also saw a bug about encrypted partitions *not* on LVM.
But it works perfectly*) to create /boot, then an encrypted LVM and put everything else in there, as I prefer.
It is good to make full backup, and fresh install anyway.

') Oh, well... with a PS/2 keyboard, USB keyboard unable to enter passphrase at least if / is encrypted... https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3722
And i found the same on mdv 2010.2 when i tested today too.

Thanks, morgano. That's a nasty bug. I have a PS2 keyboard, so I am lucky to have old equipment. :) I left boot and / unencrypted. I just encrypted swap, tmp and home.

Did you look at other distros before choosing mga1? I'm curious what drove your selection. I have used Ubuntu in past for my laptop, so I thought I would just go there but boy was I surprised when I tried to load the latest version. Unity was a real shock to this old Gnome user. At work, I went ahead and upgraded to Mandriva 2011 and switched to Gnome in contrib, until I can figure out what to do. I've grown comfortable using Mandriva with Gnome over the years.

Fifteen? years ago I tried Redhat, failed. A couple years passed. Next try Suse: half OK, Mandrake better, but Lindows was my first Linux production system, but not fully.
2006 i had another round, ditched redmond and used Mandriva privately and in my work, except for dual boot laptop to run a couple WinXP apps.
Since then Mandriva have just worked. Tried ubuntu but found it "thin" then and it lacked some configuration automation at the same time i could not figure out how to do whatever it was manually. Stayed with Mandriva and i still do - it feels like it have just been renamed Mageia, while the new "Mandriva" have changed course ;)
