Is Mageia hurt by Redhat's code blocking?

Postby marchugo » Jul 1st, '23, 17:14

As I read in The Register, Redhat has decided to stop making the source code of RHEL available to the public:

https://www.theregister.com/2023/06/23/ ... ntos_move/

I wonder if this could hurt the Mageia Linux distribution?

Regards from Amsterdam,

Marc.

Mageia does not use or depend on Red Hat source rpm.

No, there's also quite a bit of misunderstanding around this.
If you want to read about this, check e.g. https://www.redhat.com/en/blog/red-hats ... rg-changes
Or maybe https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archive ... EYYXXUAO5/ which relates more to Fedora.

Thanks for the answers. They confirm my trust in Mageia, which I use since its early Mandrake days. I will happily continue my (small) yearly donation.

Maybe I was confused because of the origins of Mageia: it started out as a fork of Mandriva Linux, which itself was a fork of Red Hat Linux (from version 5.1, if I recall right).

So if I understand it right, the only ties with Red Hat/Fedora are nowadays the use of RPM packages? There are no dependencies of RH for fixing bugs and other software updates?

We are not *depending* on anyone.

Developers/packagers are cooperating across distros on several levels, helping each other.
At home & work Mandriva since 2006, Mageia 2011. Thinkpad T43, T510, Dell M4400, M6300, Acer Aspire 7. Workstation using LVM, LUKS, VirtualBox
