Mageia for my home server

Postby rmcellig » Feb 17th, '22, 22:40

I have an old pc from 2008 that I would like to use as a file server. It has 4 GB of ram. Would mageia be good as my file server software compared to debian server and Ubuntu server. I have used mageia before and like it. I have 2 external 12TB drives with mechanical drives.

Your advice and recommendations would serve me well.

I have various interal drives i can use even though my pc only accepts one drive.

Should be no problem as long as you think the hardware is reliable. (that said year alone dont say much about capacity) I had a file server with Mageia some years ago, on a small form factor dual core 1,6 GHz (IIRC) atom main board, 4GB RAM, and some disks. Sharing by NFS. Had owncloud server too, but just to try. Used a light weight desktop. Encryption on data drives, system on a small SSD.
At home & work Mandriva since 2006, Mageia 2011. Thinkpad T40, T43, T60, T400, T510, Dell M4400, M6300, Acer Aspire 7. Workstation using LVM, LUKS, VirtualBox, BOINC

I have an internal 2TB mechanical drive. I don't have a spare SSD drive at the moment.
