Gnome and mageia

Postby graphyte » Nov 6th, '11, 07:54

So I noticed mageia uses gnome 2.
Will this stay for a longer period of time? Or will mageia go up to gnome3 soon?

Because not a lot of people enjoy gnome3. Just asking.

The problem is just that Gnome 2 is not supported anymore by upstream, so basically we have no choice.

It's not like it's buggy.

Is there any Gnome 3 files starting to appear in Gnome 2. I'm running G2 and for terminal About Help, I see this:
Code: Select all
GNOME Terminal 3.0.0

Does that mean some G3 starting to appear? I kinda hate to see G2 go away. I'm a long time user.

Thnx.

3.4.0 is scheduled to appear March 28th, 2012. Not sure when the next release is due out, but I'm sure there is a good chance 3.4.0 will be much more usable than 3.2.0. Apparently, Gnome uses a version scheme similar to the kernel, where only even numbered dot-releases are stable and public releases. Odd ones are developer releases.

For Mageia 1, surely no Gnome3. For Cauldron and Mageia 2, surely no more Gnome2, as it's not supported upstream anymore.
Complain to Gnome project for that, not here. The only thing you get for Cauldron and Mageia 2 is the fallback mode for Gnome Shell.

I wasn't complaining, I was just curious if some G3 was making its way into Mga1. I understand G2 will come to EOL at some point. This current machine may not be able to run G3 so I'm prepared to to use another DM/WM. I like using Openbox but have KDE4 installed for the family, along with G2.

Thnx.

Would that be Mate? Linux Mint has it as an option, as well as extensions to Gnome 3 to fill in what's missing (MGSE).

Talking Gnome, my previous successful distro was Ubuntu 9.10. I loved it but was getting difficult to support. Most attempts to upgrade on this infernal machine was dogged with a variety of problems whether it was Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora under either Gnome or KDE.

So I'm happy to to back with an up-to-date stable as a stick of rock (actually I guess sticks of rock aren't necessarily that stable!) intuitive and speedy distro. One minor thing (very minor) though. Ubunto 9.10 would flash the icon when you click on an app in the launcher panel and it was clear you had actually clicked it. You could then sit back and wait for the program to appear. On Mageia it kind of indents slightly and you've got to watch it closely to make sure you've hit your target.
Any chance of making the mouse click over an icon a bit clearer?

Thanks for a brill distro and good luck :D
