General Questions about Mageia

Postby wb4bbc » Oct 19th, '11, 05:37

I am a new user coming over from Ubuntu and when I first started in Linux, my first Distro was Mandrake, so this is like a long time in coming home for me. Things still feel alittle strange to me , but I been doing things the Ubuntu way for awhile. I was wondering have they decided on a release cycle ? The discussion just give the proposals and then nothing . Also was wondering are we going to be able to upgraded without wiping our systems ? I am very happy that Mageia is here and I look forward to many happy years here.

You will get almost all information about Mageia's ways, plans for the future, decisions, top rated beverages of Mageia developers, etc. by following the blog: http://blog.mageia.org/en/ .
The one about releases: http://blog.mageia.org/en/2011/07/17/ma ... -planning/

Upgrading to the next version should be painless.

That's an interesting way of putting things. See, for me personally, doing a Windows upgrade is more painful than doing a clean install of Mageia with a complete hard drive wipe. So... what do you mean by painless?

I did not talk about a "Windows upgrade" (never did one, is it possible?). When talking about upgrading from one Mageia version to the next I used the expression "painless" in the sense that it does not
- wipe your data off the disk
- cause RSS because of too many mouse clicks
- drive your cat insane.

I used the expression "should" because a painless upgrade depends on how much you tinkered with the "old" system, how much you changed, used 3rd-party repositories, used backports, etc. Of course the developpers can only test and QA an upgrade from one "official" system to the next.

Yes, it is, but there are predefined update paths, normally you can only directly upgrade +1 release,
i.e. from Vista to 7, but there are also some restraints regarding to the different editions:

And I meant update not upgrade. My bad.
You know, that little balloon pops up and then Windows proceeds to steal all your bandwidth and you need to restart your computer and it takes forever to shutdown and then restart.

Thanks for the information. I think the 9 month release cycle is a good goal. I would like to see a LTS release, and they talk about looking into a LTS later on.

Thanks for the replies again.
