Problem with access to HP network printer

Desktop Laptop
altair canopus
ethernet to router wireless
Mandriva 2010.1 Mageia 1
CUPS 1.4.3 CUPS 1.4.6
hplip 3.10.2 hplip 3.11.2

Wireless allinone HP Photosmart Premium series C310a : driver B109a

Problem: How to enable network printer for canopus?

The printer queue on altair is hp310 = socket:/192.168.0.3:9100.
hp310 set up via hplip/CUPS on canopus, same URL but it cannot find
the printer but it can be pinged from the laptop. The job remains
pending forever. On canopus CUPS detected hp310@altair also and on
that queue the job reports "connecting..." forever. CUPS is allowed
internet access in the firewalls on both machines and port 9100/tcp is
also allowed on canopus (don't know if TCP is the correct type).

I am the village idiot as far as networking is concerned so would
appreciate any pointers.

Things have suddenly got much worse. I noticed an error in the URI, / not //. At this stage could not get into CUPS as root. localhost:631 not accessible. Removed CUPS and hplip and reinstalled them but this did no good, root still cannot access CUPS. This actually happened under Mandriva as well and I never found out how to recover CUPS. When I try hp-toolbox -> setup device it cannot find any HP devices on the network and does not allow a URI to be specified.

Hoping that a Mageia reinstall is not necessary.

How did you setup your printer initially? Via CUPS webinterface, via Mageia Control Center or via hp-setup?
Maybe in CUPS you only need to change the connection type for the printer:

Look at this post: https://forums.mageia.org/en/viewtopic.php?p=6045#p6045
this would be the same general procedure for your network printer,
instead that you should select on of the network URIs which CUPS should offer.

Thanks for that link. I had overlooked the edit option and went ahead and deleted the printer before reinstating it with the correct URI. The server access problem was one of those senior moments. I had forgotten to start CUPS after reinstalling.
