Mandriva rpms and Mageia

Newbie here on Mageia 1. After some 13 years with Mandrake/Mandriva I felt compelled to switch to Mageia because it has integrated GNOME support, at least for the time being. So far it looks a pretty impressive achievement, well upto the high standards Mandriva has achieved. I had asked on mageia-discuss about installing Mandriva rpms; obviously a dicey proposition. Decided to try it myself because after installing ruby and rubytk TkImg was required. Copied the tkimg1.4 rpm from Mandriva and urpmi'd it. Apart from a bad signature it appeared to work - images came up fine in ruby.

I imagine the cognoscenti will condemn this procedure as a general practice; viz Anssi's warning about installing nVidia graphics drivers from the website rather than running his packaging script, which I shall certainly use on Mageia. It worked very well on Mandriva. And if I were a packager I would do something about TkImg but in fact I would need a two-year apprenticeship to be useful to the community.

OK, Tcl&Tk update just landed on my TODO list ;)

About the Nvidia driver: do you really need the latest one? Then use Anssi's script.
If not, use the one in the Mageia repositories.

In general, it's no good practice to advice people to install packages from other distributions.
It may work, but it may also break your system, please remember that.
