First impressions of Mageia 1

Downloading the 64-bit DVD ISO lasted barely an hour.
Installation took approximately 35 minutes.
No problems encountered and by-the-way Vi$ta cleaned from the machine, as expected and hoped.
So now a Linux-only laptop with Mageia on disc 1, and Mandriva on disc 2.

The house is built, and now it's time to take care of the interior.

Words are failing, i AM really very much surprised (honestly; not really after earlier experiences).
But girls and guys you came with something. What did it all take me? Including downloading, installing and tweaking, not more than 4 hours.
Never had this smooth installation before in many years.
This first release is going to be a smashing hits, where it concerns me.

Not one single error during all activities.
Printer (HP CP1515n) installed and worked within minutes.
Sound is working just without any intervention.
NVidia-proprietary-driver for my GeForce 8400M GS, the same. Okay a reboot needed there, but that is the only reboot needed so far (outside the installation-process).
My Acer Aspire 7720G is smiling at me with it's latest operation-system.
Flash-64-bits downloaded from Adobe, and installed into /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins, and working.

Different kinds of add-ons installed for Firefox, like StumbleUpon, AdblockPlus, ForecastFoxWeather, XMarks etc, all without a glitch.
Installed a nice theme, Bloomind FT SilverGlow 2.0.2, which fits in nicely with the Oxygen-theme.

Also downloaded the nice MIB Ossigieno icons, theme, splash, and whatever. Installed them and have everything right at the place.

And Mandriva can easily be started from the GRUB-menu.

A big thumb-up to all involved in the making of this great first release!!!
I hope more are going to follow with same experiences.

Depends on the single mirrors when they sync. the mandrivauser.de mirror started syncing around midnight and was complete with all packages and ISOs at some time in the small hours of the night (Central European time zone).

Not having so much luck with my download ... 12% done, about 10 hours remaining. My connection isn't usually slow. Oh well, I can wait another day. Perhaps it's just a sign of the initial popularity of the download!

I look forward to trying out Mageia. Mandriva has been my distro for a number of years now, and now I hope to be able to make an informed decision about where the fork will take me. I don't want parallel distros, and I'm not a distro-hopper: a one-distro man!

I've been distro shopping for a few weeks now
since I'm on older hardware unity is not going to work
I'm trying not to get too far off the beaten path
the support community needs to be big enough & friendly
I have 10 distro's loaded up on Virtual box [Ubun 10.10 host]
testing on VB tends to highlight the amount of resources each distro uses, but still lets me take my time & fool around with different things
the install from a 32 bit torrent was easy enough
Chromium was in the repository
gnome DE, which is conducive to my work flow


I'm wondering about what the release cycle is going to be?
I'm looking for a reasonable amount of stability, a rolling release would be good
I haven't run into any deal breakers yet
the origin & goals of the devs is perfect
I see there is a route to have some input for the future path

I left the computer running overnight to download the DVD ISO. Now I'm installing on the laptop. I opted for an upgrade of Mandriva 2010.2 in the first instance, because I have some stuff installed (including a Windows XP virtual system with some software for work) that I'd rather not have to redo from scratch. But if the upgrade doesn't work well, I'll go for a full install.

I've been experimenting with the alpha and beta on a VM, now I'm almost done downloading the stable for a full, clean install (I like wiping my HDD every few months).
I was really impressed with the alpha and beta, and have high expectations from stable.

I just want to point out that I have been keeping an eye on Mageia on Distrowatch. When the RC came out it was at 43, now it's climbed to 29! (Over the last 6 months). But if you look at the last 7 days it's number 8!

All done! The update from Mandriva 2010.2 (via DVD) went slowly, but well. W-LAN was working after the update, so all necessary tidy-up work could be done immediately. A problem with the Flash plugin that I had under Mandriva seems to be fixed in Mageia 1, perhaps as a result of the new KDE packages. My virtual machine works. All is good, pretty much.

But since we're talking about "first impressions" ... what are the Oxygen artists thinking? They could not have made the blue folder icons look more clunky and scary if they had tried to. It's a shame that most other icon themes are incomplete, so unfortunately it's not as simple as choosing a different theme. I'll just have to learn to live with Oxygen, as I did in Mandriva ...

I would like to congratulage to entire Mageia team! I'm really impressed! Desktop is snappy , propriety drivers installed in a breeze, nice goodies in the repos (bespin, oxygen-transparent, calligra, etc). Keep up the GREAT work!

My first impressions are very good. Congratulations the whole team Mageia for the excellent work and thanks to everyone who contributed to this important event for free software.

I concluded the complete installation of a Mageia 1 KDE LiveCD, installed all peripherals (printer, scanner, video, audio) and checked various settings related to use of mageia as Desktop and everything went very well.

The Mageia 1 is a fast and stable. I'm glad to see working well the "quick launcher" of LibreOffice, which together with the modification of your configuration, make it get too fast.

After install Mageia 1, I made a text reporting and giving suggestions about some details of the configuration based on a list of settings that had Mandriva 2010.2, of point of view of the user desktop, in Portuguese in Forum MageiaBrasil (or in english, with translation with the google language tool).

I have slightly mixed impressions.
There are several differences from Mandriva that take a little getting used to. Some of the configurations got moved from the KDE system settings to the MCC. Not life-threatening, but an annoyance to experienced users. New users wouldn't be looking for it somewhere else, so that's alright.
It took me several hours to get everything set up the way I like it (I did a clean install) and most of the difficulties were KDE in origin, not Mageia.
I agree that the new icons are ugly, but kde-look.org can solve that.
I installed from a liveUSB and it was pretty flawless, requiring only one reboot to repartition the HDD. Getting the locale set up properly was probably my biggest issue, but I eventually sorted that out as well.
So all in all, as the first stable version it is very good, but there is always room for improvement. I have high hopes for Mageia, and look forward to following its career closely.

This is really the 1st system I've spent time on that uses RPM instead of DEB packages
the manager looks like apt & software center from ubun combined, very sensible, but a little trickier to use
I'm on a VB so it is clear mageia is stingy with resources, the boot time is less than 2 minutes
I was able to install all my favorite Google apps, though picasa would only run v2.7
I installed clemintine music player & can easily connect to my files on an external HDD
the control center is easier to use than the mint version
I'm on Gnome DE, but have cloned the install by exporting an appliance so I can try some others

I would like to remove a few of the extra steps at boot up, like the login since I don't need the security, I don't really need the choice to boot into safe mode everytime

I just cannot say enough about how well the Installation and operation of Mageia 1 has gone

for desktop, laptop, office networking, remote access , it all works great

all of the issues I had turned out to be me not seeing something obvious

Quick , clean , and straight forward.
Today I have completed 2 installs,
1 for my Aunt that was a Distro upgrade from mandriva 2010.2.
1 for myself which was a fresh install from downlaoded cd image.
Both went smoothly, though I did read the forums beforehand so knew what to expect, and also had heads up to remove the nvidia driver from mandriva 2010 before doing the dist-upgrade.
my own system was up and running much faster than I expected , download about 45 mins, default install about 45 mins, and about an hour of personal tinkering
The desktop is clean and responsive , I have had coment from my Aunt that her system is runnig quicker and smoother.
First impression , 2 installs in 1 afternoon and I am still smiling , great job done by all involved , many thanks.

just had a call from my cousin after seeing his mums system has asked if I can come down and look at changing his over , no need to shout about it , Mageia is selling itself .
