Do you switch over to DNF or stick with URPM?

Postby Dlrobin874 » Sep 16th, '21, 14:04

According to the docs mixing the two can cause issues with automatic dependency removal. So just was curious who prefers one or the other and why?

Would be cool if rpm could store manual vs automatic install status natively like dpkg but that's a separate issue.

Are you referring to https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Using_DNF#Wa ... mechanisms ?

I cannot confirm that, and if it would be the case, should probably be reported as a bug.
I'm using both urpmi and dnf (although dnf only rarely, if only Fedora-style repositories are provided by upstream) and haven't seen such issues yet.

You can also query orphaned packages at any time using both, via
Code: Select all
urpmq --auto-orphans
dnf autoremove --assumeno

That's what I saw.

But mostly it just made me curious what other people were doing since it's rare to have a choice of package managers. I do have to say I appreciate urpm* a lot just because it seems to refresh metadata much faster than DNF.

I had both DNF and urpmi on Mageia 6 and when I tried to move to Mageia 7 I had a LOT of trouble. I suspect (but cannot say for sure) that part of the problem was because of the two package managers. I do know I only succeeded with the upgrade after uninstalling dnf. I do not have dnf on Mageia 7, and I have not yet moved to Mageia 8 partly because I am totally swamped with work and partly because I still have nightmares about that move from 6 to 7.

I use only DNF for 2 simple reasons - I'm used to it and when dealing with RHEL stuff it's easier.
Back in 2009 or so, I had to get used to yum from urpmi and so I keep using it in the DNF incarnation since Mageia supports it. :D

New Mageia user here, but previously used Mandriva years ago (32-bit days).

I kept URPMI installed, but am using DNF to update, as I am also comfortable using it from when I previously used Fedora. I have not installed dnfdragora.
