I do agree with you that the installer should just work. But reality intrudes, and there are so very many permutations of...well...everything...that it is difficult to make it all work all the time.

Also, from your earlier posts, I was pretty sure you would not totally understand what I wrote. However, you did the right thing (google) so you learned a bit. Now try again. Maybe everything will work and if not, you've had some direction that you can use to ask proper questions, which will get you proper answers. And learning is always good, right? :D

yep. learning is good.

Well now. I guess you could call it progress. It installed .. .. I think. I was able to boot up but mageia was not visible as a boot option so I chose the mint distro which is the first boot option per bios instructions. I did get stopped by some sort of error sparse file not allowed thingy which instructed me to mash any key to continue. .. .. which I did and it booted into mint just fine. I used gparted to look at the mageia drive. For some reason that drive has 6 partitions. I had instructed the installer to use the whole drive for whatever mageia wanted it for. It befuddles me why there are so many different partitions. a couple ext4 a couple unallocated a swap etc. sda1 ext4, then an unallocated, then sda2 extended, then sda5 swap, then another unallocated, then sda6 ext4 (I think mageia is on this one as it is the largest partition with 28 gigs used and a 1.7 tera unused), then another unallocated. Maybe I should simply ask, what should I try now. I asked for grub2 instead of using default grub. Other than that I stayed pretty much braindead and let Mageia do it's own thing.

update. .. .. I wiped the hard drive in gparted then tried the install again, this time using mageia defaults. Still the same result.

time for bed now. Thanks for the feedback. Even though I still do not have what I want, the feed back I have receieved has at least resulted in a significant reduction in frustration. Thanks.

brand new day update. Tried using a different dvd with kde live on. Installed from live session. Still no magia drive visible during boot up. Good news is the sparse error disappeared. Still have same amount of partitions on drive even though I wipe the drive before rebooting with the disk, then I tell installer to go ahead erase and use the entire drive for it's own purposes.

Wheeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I found the solution Yayyyyyyyyy!!!!!!! I still do not know why I had bootloader issues but I now have succuessfully used and repeated the solution three different times.

Assuming you know where you put the distro. Mine is on sda1. You must open terminal or konsol. Commands for konsol might be su instead of sudo

First command I entered in the terminal is: sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt .... Then entered my password when asked.

Second command I entered is : sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sda

Third command I entered is: sudo update-grub

I mash the enter key after each entry. After the final entery I reboot and boot to whichever distro on any drive. They all show up.

This solution should work from any location on any drive including a live session. I used it from a different working distro on a different drive.

I found this process at the following site: http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/245

Great mageiawant. Welcome here. It's nice that you didn't give up. No software is free of bug in every circumstances.

Please use code tags next time for reading clarity.

You forget you are communicating with someone so dense that it took mega hours to discover a simple simple solution. I have no idea what code tags are. I see the button but am clueless. I will google it and find out.

I never took time to post in any distro forum before Mageia. So unless it is a symbol common to document writing I would be totally unfamiliar with it. And even if it was a symbol common to document writing I still may be clueless. The only reason I ended up posting is because Mageia seemed to have the goods under the hood and I felt this was one distro worth the time and effort.

Does anyone know if Gimp2.8.6 will work unbroken in Mageia3. I notice they only have 2.8.2. Which is a tad behind the times.

I totally understand you here as phpBB is sometimes not intuitive to me either. For example help for you (and me ) is "hidden" on the right side of editing window under the name of BBCode is ON. Luckily it's not hard to understand when you find whatever you were looking for. You can try to fix code tags in your last response by simply adding sign [ before so called tag quote and use Preview button to check the result. Very convenient. At least for me.

Nice to read that. I wish you that you can stay with Mageia with satisfaction.

True. Almost a year. Strangely I didn't even realised that. I think that is much more likely that you'll receive answer if you post another thread about it.
