First impressions of Mageia 3 RC

Postby Erik » May 6th, '13, 01:33

Today I installed Mageia 3 RC on my production computer. I took a few precautions of course that I could undo my installation easily. Mageia installed without a hitch or glitch. Excellent. Everyting works. A few weeks ago I tried PCLinuxOS and Rosa Fresh, because Mageia 2 always booted up with the 3.4 kernel, and this kernel froze my webcam image. I went back to 3.3 but I had to do this explicitly everyday. Standard bootup always took the newer kernel. PCLOS works well, but I dislike apt-get. I even had to rename a .rpmnew file myself in order to get pulseaudio working! Rosa Fresh looks beautiful. And I like the timeline in the new Rosa menu. The Mandriva/Mageia Control Centre, however, is broken, some parts work already in the new Rosa constellation, others don't yet. Also the other computers of my little LAN could not share a directory on my main computer without mounting the share as root. I never had to do this before. I wasted a lot of time trying to get things as they used to be. So today I installed Mageia 3 on my computers.

No problems at all!!! Everything works as hoped for! The installation procedure gives the choices I was accustomed to; it was like coming home again.

Thank you, all developers and the whole community for this excellent distribution.

I am happy to tell you that I cannot help you solving problems; there were none.

Thanks again and keep up the good work.

Hi Erik,

This is how I felt. Mandrake>Mandriva>ROSA????? When I went to distrowatch I wondered who Mageia was. You know...this unheard of distro. As soon as I read who was involved it got installed. I install it for two friends who also run it and I'm installing Mageia 3 on a laptop for a friend as soon as I get can get it.

I had a few quirks, most of which were my fault or not a Mageia specific problem. Runs like a dream but it doesn't want to wake up from sleep all the time. It used to work and I'm just going to upgrade before I waste time on Mageia 2. I've looked all over (briefly) and still can't find it.

I have external drives, internal SSD's and HDD's...so, if it is a drive not waking up or something I'll figure it out after I upgrade. It sometimes freezes entering sleep too. It never done this before a while back and I don't think I changed anything.

I'm still very happy with it. I hope 3 installs ok and I can work on the sleep issue if it is still an issue. It is rare so that makes it hard to track down. I really haven't had the time so it may be simple.

Anyway, good luck to you and welcome aboard.

Hi yankee495,

I know nothing about sleeping and awakening of computers. I do not have a laptop. For me a desktop computer besides my desk, a flatscreen and a keyboard on my desk with a lot of room for books when needed is ideal. When I need a portable computer I use a netbook; small and easy. Real laptops are heavy, hot and too big for easy handling.

I hope you will be as happy with Mageia as I am. I loved Mandrake/Mandriva because of its ease of use and reliablility. I also appreciated Adam Williamson's help and contact with Mandriva S.A. when necessary and regretted very much that he was fired. The help at Mageia Forums is good too, and -- important to someone without technical knowledge like me -- patient and polite.

Good luck with you Mageia 3 installations.

Greetings,

Erik.
